Guys,

I've got someone interested in my FJ60 for sale who wants to tow a horse trailer with it. Any idea on tougue weight and trailer weight specs on the 2" reciever? Are the numbers limited by the low hp of the 6-cyl, or by the brakes and frame?

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Nonnynonns

Yes and yes to HP and brakes relative to trailer weight. Tongue weight would be more an issue with the spring capacity. If you have added some sort of heavy duty springs then tongue weight capacity should be improved. Don't most horse trailers have trailer brakes anyway?

I thought tongue weight was partially determined by the rating of the receiver hitch and how it is mounted to the frame.....

I believe the rating of a 60 is 300 lbs tongue weight and 3000 lbs trailer weight on a standard hook-up. If you use a weight distributing hitch then those numbers go up to 550 lbs tongue and 5500 lbs trailer.

Of course you need to have a good receiver bolted to the frame of the rig rated for that capacity and alot of time to get where your going cause it will be slooooooow.

Cruiser's are limited mostly by power and wheelbase. A short wheelbase like on a 60 makes it easier for the trailer to push the truck around. A real good sway control is a must if your pulling near the limits of the rig and trailer brakes would be absolutlely neccessary.

Forgot to mention that the beauty or a 60 is that you can flog the crap out of the engine without worry of really hurting it as long as your cooling system is working 100% and you keep her under about 3600 rpm. The tranny won't be hurt because it's a manual and no heat up problems like that of a 62 with an auto. Other good mods would be:

-helper springs or a add-a-leaf
-poly bushings
-swaybar from a 62 (only a option on newer 60's)
-pump up rear tires much harder than normal
-complete check of braking system
