Hi All

I have a 77 FJ40 and love it. I have been approached about buying an FJ60. Is the 60 a good vehicle. What is it like off road compared to a 40. What are common faults with it. Would a diesel version be even better. I would use the cruiser as a DD and to go offroading. I prefer round headlights thus the 60 and not the 62. Thanks

i never liked them..they were the epitome of mom mobile...then, i bought one. now my 40 sits. another guy in the club ran into the same problem...i can't remember the last time i saw his 40

I understand what you mean mom mobile but why do you like it?

Wagons are better in almost every way then the SWB 40. The exception is very tight boulder filled trails, then the 40 excells. The 60's have the traditional overbuilt Land Cruiser chassis with 17 extra inches in the wheelbase. It is much more comfortable. Most of the time, like highway, moderate trails, the LWB has the advantage. Plus a SWB 40 is taxed to carry all your stuff if you go for more than 1 day. The coolest thing though, is that you can sleep in a wagon, not out in the rain. The really built 60's are awesome, even in the rocks. Pismo Jim, who sometimes posts here, has a very well built SOA 60 that is great in the rocks. I have followed him twice through the Rubicon and it is a great truck. The trick is lots of rocker armor. 60's are so good, mine has me thinking of selling the 40 and building the 60 into a monster. I am trying to buy a 62 off one of my partners, for my 16yo daughter, then sell the 40, and build the 60. That's the plan this week, wagons are that good.

I was in the same possition when trying to decide on a cruiser, i needed it to commute to school with as well as enjoy off-road. For the same reasons that Cruiserdrew pointed out, 60's are a much better split-purpose vehicle. Regarding diesels, it's all a matter of opinion. As you probably know, diesels have great low-end torque and come with benefits like the 5-speed trannies and better fuel mileage. However, from stock they are generally less powerful than the trusty 2F and the more powerful 6-cyl versions go for a fairly high premium, plus you have to worry about importation, and parts can be difficult to find.

For me it was all worth it considering how many highway miles it will see. Plus, a turbo can take care of any power issues ::) and Canada wasn't all that far from home. Diesels are just BADASS :D, I had to have one.

Would you sell the 40? You can never have too many cruiser's, but you certainly won't be disappointed by a 60.

Oh, and a "mom mobile"?? HELL NO :flipoff2:

Thanks for the replys. I see your point. It seems to me that any cruiser cost a pretty penny but 60s seem to be a bit more? At least what I have seen in the auto traders. Any other opinions?

Just checked your profile. Since your'e in Canada the FJ60's are not available. I'm on the west coast (Vancouver) and I have two BJ60's and I wouldn't even dream of wanting an FJ60 (2F powered). The diesels are better in most every way. There is little difference between the 3B and the 2H in terms of power and personally I think the 3B is a better engine.
My kid has hauled a complete FJ55 with a non-turbo BJ60 and it is a little slow but when I hauled an FJ62 body or the FJ55 on a flat bed trailer with the '82 which has an AXT turbo I was able to easily maintain 70 mph on the flat interstate!
Go diesel, you won't be disappointed.
