I have an MPH used OEM gauge cluster and a NIB KPH gauge cluster for my FJ40. I’d like to switch the MPH faceplate into the new KPH cluster. I understand that I’ll need to do the known fix for the ammeter on the new cluster.

Has anyone posted the disassembly process to accomplish the faceplate change?

@Michael B turn me on to this last year and I did use the new faces directly onto the old faces…to refresh one just… for cosmetics…then I had one of the KPH models and used the MPH decal on it…worked fine…I never did check to see where the needle falls at any speed but the thing looks great…. I did go with the black original type

I found this site through another post - did you get the mat black or gloss black option? Sounds like you were happy with the results? Probably the easiest option for these KPH clusters...

There was a OEM Toyota SST at one time , i saw it in my first team leaders personal tool box drawer of goodies he had acquired , i will try to find more info on it or a same in kind Gizmo-SST ...

- it will remove the needle for you when properly applied

- it also will then correctly aid in re-installing it for you too

@MrBoatman

- this is very very close to what i have , mine are blue and a OTC SST 4pc kit , i could not find them , maybe a long disc/ NLA SST topic ?

- you absolutely need more then a 1pc double ended one with the V kerf in both ends , you will need the smooth end on one of these for sure

the GM AMAZON LINK is the Idea here , BUT ...................

- the TOYOTA / ASIAN / JAPAN vehicles need one with MORE of a right angle or
L on end
- use KID gloves here , re-installing beedle is where my learning curve was when i bent the tiny azz needle pin over on itself , that is a you-loose moment i will never forget
- PLUMB LEVEL & SQUARE is the concept for both removal and
especially install .........especially install !
- you should graze You Tube an look for like a FAST & FURIOUS Japanese type car tech video on this topic , best close comparison , this is where the most common today's going on's with needles on and off SST tool use will be found ......
USA made DETROIT applications are VERY Different , Do not simply refer to it or them ....
Please Post your you tube video of any JAPONESE vehicle how to needed job below , it will help others in the same way my below TECH info will help you now
thanks
matt

I have the Matte black….looks great and fairly straightforward to put on…like any other decal, but be patient around the needle. No real problem, just be careful

“How do you plan to remove the needle?”

I found thie video below and planned to do it this way.
Do you have a different method to remove the needle and preserve it to reinstall in the new gauge cluster? I’m trying to learn the best way to do it because I’ve never done it before

I don’t know how to reinstall it other than pressing it back into the needle stem. Is there more to it?

Thanks, ToyotaMatt. I have very similar tools as what you’ve cited.

How is the faceplate attached to the gauge cluster?

DO NoT …….

Pry or Try to remove the front Pewter Painted metal and glass cluster face
/ cover ….don’t …

You remove the #1 JIS Vessel Phillips’s head screws on the back side blue circuit board cover

You will be removing the rear cover parts and accessing everything from the back Slide …
