Hey, don't start rumours :D That only applies to the rear of the 80 and 100 lockers, not to the front. Have not seen the FJ rear locker, but believe it is the same as the front of an 80.

Wasn't it you who said the ARB front locker too is much stronger than the OEM?

it's A-TRAC or locker

It's one or the other with the FJ Cruiser. However, the FJ that Joe Bacal was driving on the Con had been "tweaked" by Toyota--it COULD use both at the same time! So it is possible--now someone needs to figure out the secret!

From the FJ tech manual:

B20N type locking rear differential
a. Electric actuated locking mechanism
b. Driver-actuated via dash-mounted switch
c. Operation speed of 5mph or less
d. When locked-- will prevent A-TRAC operation.

Yes. Toyota. Maybe they compared the two FJ's to one another on purpose? This way they can decide pre-release. THAT sounds like Toyota.

So the truck they report as "capable" on the tests is actually "more" capable than the one you'll find on showrooms?

That's deceiving advertising to me... :flipoff2:

I thought about that, too. But when I read Joe's piece, he says that he only used one or the other (usually A-TRAC, by the way), so in the end it didn't matter.

What I am interested in is who is going to sleuth that same A-TRAC+locking diff ECU tweak first!

Hopefully nobody Dave. Toyota way change this back to the way all their other units operate before they make them. TRAC AND REAR LOCK. We HOPE!

Good news according to this months Four Wheeler Mag:

"We found ourselves engaging the A-TRAC to get us through deeply eroded two-tracks that proved too formidable for the rear locker alone after we'd stuck a wheel in the air."

Two conclusions:

1. You can rear lock and use TRAC at the same time.
2. It shows how helpful a TRAC-controlled Toyota can be (like a 4Runner, GX, or 2000+ 100) in cooperation with a ARB locker.

Look forward to that FJ. I might put my plans for another 100 on hold. Gotta see an FJ first. (My wife hates it  )

Bwahahaha... like the opinions of magazine writers are worth anything.

Good that you can use both trac and the rear locker though, so long as trac can be disabled in its entirety I'm happy.

True. True. And you'll be happy. A-TRAC CUT OUT! :D

You should be open to the thought of how effective rear lock/front TRAC can be. Well, maybe you are. Sorry how that sounded. In tight rocky spots where you need to turn, locking the rear AND front can fight you severely as you well know. Somethimes you just can't turn. When locking the rear isn't enough, adding TRAC works 95% of the time and with:
*Full turning capability
*No rish of front breakage due to a locked front.

Rarely do I ever have to lock my front in the 100. Ooops, I forgot. I don't really wheel it. :D

Good news for the FJ!

I realise Trac is very advantageous is 90% of wheeling situations... but for the wheeling situations I find myself in the vast majority of the time Trac = The devil. But so long as I can disable it I'm a happy camper.

Shotts, that chip on your shoulder Is now visible from space...
