I'm currently driving an FJ Cruiser, the 5th in a line including 2 PU's, 1 4Runner and an FJ40. I've found that there are several things that are notable in the Toyota 4WD legacy in capability, reliabitly, forgivness of the driver:doh: , etc. Also attributable to the legacy is marginal fuel range. My best mileage to date is ~15.8 combined, meaning I've gotta be careful in Mexico and some US locations or need to carry Gerry (Jerry, Jerri?) cans. Warning lite goes on at 200-225 miles w/ 4 Gal reserve.

I would appreciate:

a) comparable stories/input
b) sources for larger fuel tanks or carriers for Gerry Can

That's always been a beef of mine with my Toyotas. A few weeks ago I nearly ran out of gas in my Tundra coming back from California. I didn't wan't to pay $3.85 per gallon and figured I had enough to get to Yuma and fill up. With about 50 miles to go the idiot light came on and I began sweating -- literally. It was about 100 out and I shut the a/c off to conserve fuel -- I don't know if it made a difference, but I figured I would try anything to not run out. As it turns out, I did not run out of gas, but I did put 25 gallons in my 25 gallon tank when I arrived at the gas station.

I found this attachment that should work for the FJ. Given my past experience I think I'll get one.

Cool Can Mount - I wonder what the load capacity of the rear door is where the spare mounts? Would the extra 45 lbs or so put to much of a load on that area while bouncing offroad?

BTW - I did a similar desert run from LA to Phoenix assuming I'd find gas, but did't till the border. I was so concerned I not only shut off the A/C, but closed my windows to reduce drag!

I think you guys have lead foot syndrome. I have an MT6 and I get easily over 300 miles.. most of the time I get around 325-330 and I ussually fill it up with 17/18 gallons. That'd be around 19/20 mpg. Pretty good I think

Both of the FJ40's I've had got about 250 miles out of a tank of gas.
Around 9 or 10 years ago I put a Confer Aux. tank on my current 40 and haven't thought much about it since.

Somebody should be coming out with an Aux. tank for the FJC soon, as I recall there are a couple of places between the frame rails to tuck one.

Carrying Jerry cans sucks. :frown:

That's good to hear. ~300 or above is satisfactory for day to day I think. I get 339-370 in the 100. Last tank was 366mi on 21 gallons which is pretty good (17.4) for a bank vault on wheels like the 100 series. :D

edit: forgot the 6% error for oversize tires. My numbers are revised now.

Even my best was under 16 in cruise on the interstate. I've got the MT6, roof rack, 2-1/2 lift and BFG 285 AT's with about a 5% error to speedo, but still get the idiot lite at around 220 and have to put in 15 gal.

I will be looking for an aux tank, I had one on my FJ40 also, or a larger replacement.

Well the 285 ATs and the lift makes the truck less aerodynamic.. so lets say from the 18mpg the MT6 gives you.. yo go down to 15/14 mpg because of them.. which would make sense... I have no mods whasover I always go below the E-line like I said I ussually fill it up with 17-18 gal.

This makes me upset . I'm looking to buy a new vehicle within a year and the FJC is at the top of my list. The biggest downfall of it is fuel mileage (which isnt bad) and the premium requirement.

All of this would be solved if they put the d-4d in it. Toyota's 3.0 L 4-cyl turbo diesel. The worst case mileage, about 20 mpg. But, the automotive industry conforms to a state that elects Arnold Achwartzaneggar as their governor.

1) There's no premium requirement, I run regular on mine just fine.
2) I get 20 mpg if I drive normaly (not punching it)
3) it appears that the FJ has a 21 gallon tank, I ran out of gas today to test it out.. and I filled the thing up with 21 gallons of gas.
4) I am pretty sure after the supra toyota "swore" to not import/produce any diesel/super/turbo chaged vehicle for the US market and concentrate on hybrids/cleaner vehicles for the us and sadly that's what sells over here.
5) did I get an abnormal sized fuel tank? that's awesome if I did.
6) 20mpg for an out the box 4x4 rig is not bad at all.. Jeeps get 14 on the good days.

Please.. NO 4 cylinders! A 6 cyl is small enough. Too bad it didn't come with the straight 6 like the old 40.

I've filled up 3 times (AT) all my driving is mixed city / highway with a tad off road and I've gotten 17 - 18 mpg each time. I'ld be wary of counting on 21 gallons in the tank as the specs list a 19 gallon tank.

hahah a 4 cylinder Turbo Diesel(what the guy you quoted was talking about) can push about 130hp and about 250 lbs/ft down low @ 1400rpms , and still give me 25mpg worst.
So I'll take that little 4 cylinder over the 4.0L V6.

You may be running regular gas but you most likely will notice a decrease in power and economy as the computer adjusts the timing for the lower grade fuel.
Maybe not much but I would bet the timing gets retarded some.
