So I have an '09 Honda CRF230F (dirt bike) that I have learned the basics of bikes on. I.e. shifting, turning, etc, etc.

I am looking to get a street bike so that I can drive it in the warm/dry months and save money since the 62 is a real gas hog.

I'm planning on doing a MSC and getting all the gear and the like.

I'm looking into a 500-600cc bike that gets 35+ mpg (not too hard since it's a bike). Right now i'm looking at either a sport bike (CBRF4i, Ninja, etc) or a dual sport (KLR650, etc) so I can ride to and from trails without trailering.

Just wondering what are some good starter street bikes with that criteria for $2-3k

Thanks guys. And just for the fun of it, here's my bike at Rampart Range

I have dirt bikes and tried getting a street bike and got a Vulcan 750. I hated it. I ended up getting a KTM 530 xw-w which I kitted for the road (lights, turn signals, etc.). I love it. It cruises at 70 mph so smooth and has PLENTY of get up for highway driving plus I ride it in the woods. I suggest selling your CRF230 and getting something like what I did. Best thing I've done in awhile expect getting KM2s for my TLC. BTW it gets 50 mpg on the highway.

one can usually score an old rz350 in good nick for ~$3,000. great starter street unit. small, light, handles easy, but has plenty of get-up-and go so that you'll never get bored with it. very easy to work on (i can drop the engine in about 45 minutes). plus (if you do get bored with it) you can modify them up to 65 hp without it becoming a time bomb. people still race them, so there are heaps of oe and aftermarket parts/mods. pretty good bang-for-the-buck in the $3,000-$4,000 range.

and if a fella gets real lucky sometimes you'll find one that has more modern front and rear ends swapped into it for the same price as stock (better tires, brakes, suspension).

I'm partial to dual sports/street legal enduros, especially anything from KTM(I've owned a LC4 640 and now ride a 950 Adventure), but they can be pricey. Kawasaki KLR 650s, Suzuki DR400 &650s, Honda XR 650s, Yamaha WR450s are all nice bikes that can be found for short $$$.
