I searched for "fire extinguisher" and even "fire", but no luck, so I have to ask,
has anyone mounted a fire extinguisher in their FJC? Not just laying on the floor, or packed in a box in the back, but mounted so the driver can reach it when seat belted in place.

I’m asking this for a friend who just got his FJC. He’s ready to hit the trails with a new All Pro lift and front bumper/winch, and some other items installed but one thing he lacks is a location for a fire extinguisher.

Thanks,
Jerry D.

I have my power tank strapped down to the small platform in the rear and the fire extinguisher mounted just above it, below the left rear window if you were facing the rear of the truck with the rear door open.

Good thread on FJC forums, the compact models mount under the rear seat bottom, fits like a glove. I know this is a cool site & all, but its far more 80 series & earlier than FJC, you'll find answers to almost any FJ question on www.fjcruiserforums.com

I have mine mounted under the back seat behind the driver seat... I still need to make a better mount for it but the way it is now you can get to it either by folding the seat forward or pulling the pin and sliding it out... Almost the same as what was in Rockrawler's link. But I wanted it really easy to get out. Tried to mount it to the side of the driver’s seat but there was not enough room... Hope this helps

I would suggest that you fit a fire extinguisher in a place you can to very easily. I have mine in the rear door pocket of my 4R. So I open the driver door, open the passenger door behind and me and have it in had.

For guys mounting it under a seat, make sure you don't pack the rear seats full of stuff or tumble the rear seats down and fill the rig with stuff. It will make getting the fire extinguisher a bit of a problem.

"FIRE!" = EMERGENCY

You want quick thoughtless access? YES! Wherever you can reach it quickly is best. Not in a box that you have to sift through. On my FJ40, it is mounted in front of the shifter on the floor. DO NOT be ashamed to practice with it (don't pull the pin and spray, but just practice quick dismounting), it could save a life (that is what it is designed for). It is a safety device for a reason, not a show piece. I am sure you are thinking on the safety concept or you would not have posted the question. If memory serves correctly there is plenty of space within drivers reach on the FJC to mount typical fire automobile fire extinguisher. Now I ask you, do you have a 1st aid kit? That is cheap safety/insurance right there. your rig can be replaced, your life or others around you can not.

With the location of all the air bags, (Steering wheel, side curtain and seat sides), There is nowhere to install it above the seat without it becoming a hazard... I did away with standard mounting bracket because I didn't like having to lift the seat to access the extinguisher. The way it is now you just have to give it a good pull strait forward and it will pop the pin and pull out... I have practiced getting to it and have gone over it with my passengers when wheeling so everyone can get it out within seconds of opening the back door... now that this thread has got me thinking about it a little more I should rig it up to something that is going to break with 10-20#s of pressure and not use the pin...

I'm all for finding a better place for it but so far this seams to be the best for me...

First Aid /Survival kit, water purification system and Emergency food are always in the truck. Part of living in an earth quake zone...

Thanks for the suggestions and links. Will concider all points, and yes, a first aid kit, developed for personal needs is in the truck. Small flat tackle box works for me.

And on to the alternative holder for the fire extinguisher...

Thanks,
Jerry D.

As a suggestion for the pin, you could wrap the pin on the handle with a section of electrical or duct tape. Just make sure to create a "tail" at the end of the tape by wrapping it on itself, so you have something to grab onto when you need it.

The length of the tail is personal preference.

It's something I used to do back in the day with flashbangs and grenades.

Just my .02 cents

An alternative

I recently bought a "Cab Commander", from Duluth Trading
http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/...ehicleorganizers/96720.aspx?feature=Product_1

My wife sewed on a couple of D rings and it is now mounted behind the drivers seat. My fire extinguisher is in a veritcal pocket so that I do not have to open the rear door to grab it. An added advantage of using this Cab Commander is that for once we are orgainized and don't have everything bouncing around when out wheeling. A smaller first aid kit is also in the case. We carry a larger one by the rear door on extended trips. I also have a small fire extinguisher in the pocket of the passenger rear door. We should be fairly well covered if all things go wrong.

Cheers
