Field Day is both saturday and sunday. Here is a list of different groups doing field day operations across the country. Click the link and search for your section or state. The sections page will list any and all groups willing to have newcomers and visitors to their field day sites. Note that there are groups almost everywhere if someone wanted to show up and get involved.
These events are the epitome of welcoming visitors, new hams and old hams alike. This is the "marketing weekend" for the hobby. For someone relatively new to the hobby, I would suggest going out to a location with a copy of your license and introducing yourself as a new ham. For someone still unsure if they want to get their license, head out and indicate so. Either way, they'll probably sweep you off your feet getting you into a chair to talk to the world.
From an email from the ARRL about field day:
Field Day 2007 is June 23/24. One of my favorite events, it is an
opportunity to test ourselves as well as our equipment, endurance,
tenacity, and inventiveness. Great locations, camaraderie,
teaching, learning, and having fun. All this- and Ham Radio too!

Colorado has a listing of sites right on the webpage. If your state or section doesn't, email the section manager for the list.
Don't think that these will all be in the middle of nowhere. There are several locations in the hearts of many major cities. You're probably close to at least one. Get out and experience the hobby to see just how diverse it can be!
