Last night I was hit by a Honda Civic while parked. He was rolling at about 2 mph and hit the the passenger side fender, just behind the mudflap. I was fortunate in that the fender flare was not hit, and neither was the door. However, the impact creased the fender just enough that it prevents the door from opening.

Instead of taking it to a body shop, I was considering removing the outer fender and having a knowledgable friend pop it back into place and repaint it. Has anyone ever removed the fender itself and what does this entail?

it for the most part unbolts, you will have to cut the undercoating where the fender meets the inner fender, you may also have to remove the running boards, I did but that may have been because the running board was bent and in the way dont know if it will clear when straight. you will have to remove the wipers, cowl and marker light to get to bolts of the fender.

you my aalso have to remove the bumper for clearance cannot remember, dont know if you can take the fender off with the flair still on it or if the flair has to come off first, the one I did the flair was ripped off already.

'Popping' the fender back into place is pretty unlikely. The metal is most likely creased and will have to be worked.
