Welcome to the club. Your Fuel pump assembly, likely part #77020-35060, approx. $700, is on its way out and in need of replacement. While there is an access point under the rear seat and carpet to access the electric connectors to the fuel pump assembly, unfortunately one has to drop the fuel tank to actually replace it, whereas with a 100 series you cana actually remove the unit thru the interior access point. I'm guessing they were out of smart Japanese engineers when they designed this part of the 4th gen 4Runner. My 2004 V8 4Runner started with the fuel gauge issues this past week and my 2003 V8 4Runner did this a few yrs ago but the problem seemed to resolve itself after adding a bottle of Chevron fuel conditioner to a tank of gas several times over a 2,000 miles period. Until it's replaced, I'll reset my trip odo and not go below 240 miles before refilling the tank.
