Some of you will remember the Fall Colors Ride from the 4x4Wire days. Well it is still going strong. I just got off the phone with Allen "FtKnox" and the event will be taking place in the meadow off 33 the weekend of the Oct 24 - 26. This is an informal event, there is no registration.

I asked about this last night, but nobody knew anything. So, we talked about doing a GWNF day trip on the 18th or so. I'd imagine it would be easier and more fun to come along on this trip instead.

This trip is an informal gathering that has been going on for almost 10 years. It is more about checking out the leaves and camping than hardcore wheeling. The trails run will be the loops on 33 and Second Mountain if the gate is open. The usual trails.

Do people usually wheel on Fri.? Is this near Harrisonburg?

There should be wheeling on Friday and Saturday. The location is west of Harrisonburg in the GWNF.

Sounds like a good time ...

Sounds good, general directions to the meadow? What time does everyone usually leave for the trails on Sat.?

I will be heading down with some friends on Sat. See you guys there.

Hopefully someone will supply better directions, but if not ...

Follow Hwy 33 west of H'burg into GWNF. The road will be relatively flat and straight and will then wind and go up the mountain. Take the onlt left turn lane while on the uphill section and proceed maybe a mile or 2 until you cross a concrete bridge (actually concrete poured over a few metal culverts). Take the left just after the culverts and you'll quickly enter a small clearing. Once in the clearing, look for a trail to your right and follow it into the larger meadow.

And take the Slawson Cutoff, and then cutoff your slawson ...

Just drive around in the forest and look for a bunch of Toyotas. You'll be just fine.

I might head out earlier sat morning. I can know for sure later in the week. If you like, we can caravan down since I haven't been either.
I wanted to go this last sunday but couldn't...

I'm going to be wheeling at Crozet on Saturday so I won't make the Fall Colors Run.

I spoke with Allen today and he said that they will probably be heading out for the trails at 9am at the latest. He said those coming down Saturday morning should try to get to the meadow by 8:30. If you are running late you will probably pass the caravan heading down the mountain to the trails.

Those who have been to GWNF before... You could probably wait at the salt shed or the exit to the stream crossing along 33 instead of driving up the mountain to the meadow if you don't want to wake up so early.

I can't make it this weekend, but those who can have fun!
