Anybody tow a FJ40 and assorted gear four up on a flat bed or enclosed trailer using an Eco Boost F150. Website says they can be equipped to to haul 11200. Just wanting some actual testimonials on that...

A Ford Tech friend recently advised a mutual acquaintance to go with the std. V8 instead of the EcoBoost for towing duties.

My father uses an ecoboost 4wd to tow a 28' center console boat, loaded out it's pretty heavy. Towing is where the ecoboost really does well. I have a 5.4l Ford 4wd, and while it will drag anything, it's nothing like the ecoboost. I could see maybe a toss up between the 6.2l v ecoboost, depending on how much someone tows. But if towing heavy all the time, of course a diesel would be more appropriate. I have a feeling the non-ecoboost engines will only be available in work trucks one day.

Here is my quandary. I have a 2008 F-250 Diesel that I love. I just dropped some monstrous coin to get a rear main seal and my SECOND radiator replaced. The truck has 93k. These are supposed to be 250k mile trucks at least. From what I understand, this year model truck has several technical service bulletins out for radiator leaks and the like related to cooling. My truck is out of warranty, and I really don’t want to continue at this pace with regards to maintenance costs. I don’t get time haul my cruiser as much as I would like (none of us do)…..I am starting to wonder if it is time for me to dump this bad boy, and get an F150 Eco for the once/twice a year trip where I do need to haul my FJ40 a good distance. I can afford to be uneconomical once/twice a year for the cost savings I will offset in terms of less expensive oil changes, fuel filters, not to mention fuel prices. Also, I have a fear that the damn DPF particulate filter service that is required at 100k will also be a nice chuck of change.

The truck is very clean, and paid for. I have lots of equity that would roll nicely into a new F150….:D (but I don’t want another payment):bang:….unless I hear from someone that the F150 Eco tows exceptionally well at the advertised capacity.
I figure the FJ40 weighs: (chime in here if I am being too conservative)
~4660lb curb weight stock
~450lb for winch, front bumper, rear tire carrier, skid plates, Orion, larger than OEM meats, less my V8 over OEM 2F

~2900lb for an enclosed trailer with 5k axles
That all adds up to about 8k…
Add gear, spare parts, tools, luggage – 9k…That means I would be towing at about 80 percent of rated capacity. With an estimated tongue weight of say (~10%-15% conventional hitch) I am at 1000 lb, no payload. Stuff the cab with people, iPhones, munchies, and a hot Whataburger sack, I am at max capacity.
So, the question is, can a F150 do the job? And what say ye?

Aggies and Whataburger, my two favorite things. I'm class of '05 down the road from you in Fort Worth. I think it would handle your needs a couple times per year. Might check on that tongue weight though. Watch this video and all the torture tests if you haven't seen them. http://youtu.be/W32k08fw3fc My father hasn't had any problems with his.

Keep your 08. The 6.4's are known for radiator leaks, but Mishimoto has just, finally, come out with a aftermarket radiator. It fixes the problems once and for all.

I don't know if you have vehicle testing, but if you can delete the EGR and DPF do.

The 6.4's are outrageously powerful engines. They're almost like hotrod engines in a truck.
