I bought my 80 with 58,000 miles on it. I was worried about routine maintenance/repair costs such as birfields, etc up to around 100,000 miles, so I got a 3 year 36,000 mile extended warranty. It paid for itself and then some in the form of Birfield replacement (both sides), starter, oil pressure sending unit, and some other odds and ends. I wasn't worried about Toyota quality as much as I was worried about routine maintenance things coming up in the first 3 years of ownership. Thanks to my mud education about 80s, I hedged my bets and came out a little ahead. Oddly enough, the repairs needed when I owned my 4Runner almost matched my LC mileage wise, so when my starter on LC started acting up on my LC at around 65,000 miles it resembled what happened on 4Runner at 63,000 miles.
I recommend an extended warranty based on my experience, Land Cruisers can be expensive to repair, particularly if your mechanical skills or space to work on it is limited. I have repaired some things myself, other problems I took to the Toyota Dealer.
