So, I replaced my ignition coil, distributor cap and rotor, and plug wires. My rig starts well, takes a couple more cranks than before the change, and seems to idle a little more rough than before. The plug wires were an after thought - (the others broke when I tried to take them off of the distributor), and they are Autozone Durlast cheapies. My truck seem to idle just a bit faster than before too - what gives? Try to do something nice for my truck and it seems to have all gone wrong...

Are you sure you have all 6 wires firmly pushed down? Sounds like youre missing a wire...

Yeah - first thing I checked. I am wondering if maybe the ignition coil isn't the correct one. Dont some of them put out more juice at startup, then less after the engine is running?

That function is controlled by the ignitor, not the coil.

Congrats on getting in there and attempting this yourself.

After market wires can be hit or miss (no pun intended). Make sure your firing order is correct. After that start checking the individual wires – but, it may be easier to just take them back and get OEM, or quality wires.;)

Yeah, the cheap wires suck. Unfortunately I had to make do to get it running. I did not expect to have the connectors on the wires to be fused to my distributor cap when I was taking it all apart for the part replacements. Grrrrr.....

Did you silicone before reassembly so that does not occur again?

No, and it might bite me in the arse too. However, I am picking up some new wires on Thursday - O'Riellys had to order them in. Hopefully, the crap ones wont cook in that short of time. Gotta say - they have all the flexibility of pvc, and were very hard to even get seated. They probably are most of my problem. I will definately silicone the good ones!

Symtoms sound like you disturbed a vacume line or two. (cracked/split/borken) causing a vacume leak... (higher idle, longer cranking time)

Ignition system downgrade will not increase idle speed.

Try choking the engine at idle, if the RPM's increase more than 50-100 RPM's then the motor is too lean (not enough fuel or too much air).

You can use carb cleaner or brake cleaner with the straw on the can to pinpoint the area around the intake/carb/vac lines to locate the leak if you have one.

Dahondagod has it right, Why did you replace the wires to begin with, Was it running well before the wire change?
