egr filter ?? 1993 FZJ-80

After a code 71 I am trying to trouble shoot the problem, want to the booster and found that the filter is clogged with dirt and crap, the manual says to blow it out with air, it is not in great condition and would not servive a hard cleaning so................what to use as a replacement filter? Toyota does not have a replacement filter for this and can only offer to replace the entire unit for $60 some dollars. This is probably not the problem but at least a place to start

Are you talking about the EGR Vacuum Modulator Filter... the little unit next to the EGR Valve? If so, you may want to look into replacing that if it's the original. I think there's a write-up on it in the FAQ. IIRC, it can be had for near half that if you know the "right" peoples. I can't find code 71 in my '97' manual. Must be an earlier model code.
