I need to buy a new weed trimmer in the next couple days. I got my eye on an Echo SRM-210i for $239 at a local place in town. Looks like it gets great reviews online. I definitely want a straight shaft, either Stihl or Echo. Want one that's going to last! Anybody have some models to look at besides that Echo? I want to spend no more than $250.

Edit: This will be for home use only. I really like the 5 year consumer warranty on the Echos.

That is a good warranty. I would stay away from anything less then 25cc's though.

I use Tanaka weedwackers myself. They are really nice and you would definitely spend more then $250.

That Echo is a little over 21cc's. I read a review where a guy owns a lawn care business and they use those machines and they get used 5-6 hours a day and he's been running most of them 3 years. I don't plan on doing any brush cutting or anything with it. I've read some more about it tonight, and think I'll go for it. I don't feel that I need to spend anything more than that amount for what my use of it will be, and it seems to be the best value in that price range.

Yes it does sound like a deal to me. The weeds I have to cut where I live are aweful---tall, thick, etc. That's why I like to use larger machines. More power=less wear on equipment=longer lasting machine. Nice cause they work just fine for small nice jobs too!

I like ECHO for blowers.

When it comes to weed eaters I prefer to go with Stihl.

granted this is just personal preference but Stihl consistently day in day out will kick ass in these types of applications and I just don't have the same faith level of confidence in an ECHO for this particular type of machinery.

I like Echo a lot and use one of their chainsaws ...but I bought a small Honda 4cycle weedwacker when I needed one and it has been pretty good so far.

You never said how big your yard is.

Mine is 7 acres. :D

This will be for home use only.

Look into the STIHL FS55 line trimmer.

Buy what your local servicing dealer stands behind and supports.

A manufacture defect will show up in the first 2 hours of operation. Not 5 years down the road so don't get to wound up about the warranty. Read the fine print. In order to stay emission compliant, you have to rebuild or replace the carburetor every 6 months or one a year depending on how much you use it. You also have to replace the muffler yearly if it has a Cat on it in order to meet the emission standards. This is listed under schedule maintenance so you foot the bill, not the manufacturer. If you do not do this steps they recommend in the scheduled maintenance, the warranty is void. :D

I had the SRM-210i for 5 years. That sounds like a long time, but I used it very little, maybe 75-100ft of string out of a 250 ft pack (I replaced the rapid loader head with a standard wind head). The other day it just quit, locked up. I disassembled and saw that the piston was stuck inside the cylinder. Not sure why this happened since I did regular maintenance on the machine, winterized, and used fresh oil and gas mix.

Anyhow, I'm in the market for a new trimmer now. Btw, when I bought mine, the Echo warranty was only 2 years.

You can buy a shortblock for your Echo SRM 210. The last one I bought was $92.00. It was for a WP1000 water pump wich uses the SRM 210 engine.

I have 2 echo 210i trimmers for 2 homes I also have 2 edgers. I've not had any problem in over 5 years of home use. Just make sure I use fresh gas and buy Echo brand 2 cycle oil.

The only maintenance I've done was to pack new grease in the head of the trimmer and edger each year.

I bought all this stuff before I knew about Dan Animal.

Anyone know know a good source for a carb for a Kawasaki FJ80 engine? This is for the commercial Toro push mower.

Dan,
Can you tell use what kind of damage 10% ethanol in gas does to the gas engines? I saw something on TV about it, but did not pay attention.

Charles
