hey guys, I have a '65 FJ40 in the middle of a frame off resto. The ol f motor was running fine when the rebuild began, but now, a year into the project, I think a complete overhaul is in order. Do any of you know any mechanics/machine shops that have worked on these old tractors?? I'm in Batesville, but can get the gal about anywhere if need be.

Thanks in advance

Hello Redleg, you've come to the right cyber place for Arkansas FJ40 info. There are some very smart Toyota technical guys on the forum. Although I don't have a good suggestion, I'm confident you'll get some recommendations soon.

Myself and another friend have used Jim's Engine Service in Hensley (10 miles south of Little Rock). Was reasonable, good turnaround, and the work looked good.

Bunn's Engine Rebuilding (between Malvern and Bismarck in Hot Spring County) does great work as well. Haven't used them in many, many years, or for any Toyota stuff, but it's worth a call.

I'm sure there has to be a place closer to your neck of the woods.

Thanks for the ideas. Would like to find close to home, but someone familiar with these old things is most important.

Thanks again!

Let me know what it costs for the rebuild. I could be doing one in the future. Primary goal is to spend my money 'most' wise. So if the rebuild isn't too high I'll consider it. If its more than $1,000-1,500 I'm more than likely going to GM swap.

Are pistons even still available for this motor (or any 2F for that matter)? I'm sure there are aftermarket parts available. I'd be interested in knowing what you find out as well.

So if your truck is a 65, does that mean it still has the F135 that would have come in it? Or has it been swapped to a later model 1F or even 2F?

I know the F135 stuff is probably very scarce if not non existent.

What are the symptoms leading you to believe it needs to be completely rebuilt?

It still has the f-135. Using a little oil, probably ok. I've just got the thing apart and doing a freshen up / overhaul now would fit my timeline better than the ol tractor motor's timeline! Parts are nearly extinct, that's why I was asking for ideas of guys that have/can machine what they have to. if I don't get a lead on a Toyota guy, it will probably stay as is.
I was going to go the SBC route originally, but after getting this truck, it is so close to all original and everything works. I hated to bastardize it!

I know what you mean about keeping it original. I was in the same boat with my '67 model that had an F135 when I got it. I quickly learned that short of shipping the long block way off and spending a fortune for custom parts like pistons, it was better to start looking for another engine. I settled on a later model 2F. Still keeps things Toyota and you have a better chance of getting parts if it ever does need a rebuild.

That being said, I have a mostly complete '75 2F in my garage that I would let go. It could probably use a rebuild too, but at least parts are available.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Bobby @ The Cruiser Company in Little Rock rebuilt my '70 F motor. He did a good job and is good at sourcing parts. He is very familiar with all things cruiser.

Those parts are getting extremely rare...I think the machinist I partner with has a hard time getting the oil pumps on F motor now. I pretty sure everything else is available thru aftermarket suppliers...I can make an inquiry and get a quote for you if you would like

Got your vm today. Let me know when you get more info. Thanks!!

Just spoke with my machinist...he said he can do 99.9 percent of the job, but like I said, you will have to source an oil pump. Plus we have about 10 rebuild tricks we do to these older motors to prevent failures, little addons we have learned over 20 years thru naggin warranty issues, like an oil galley freeze plug leaking, we now drill and tap the end holes and put a flat threaded plug with sealant in them...stuff like that.

Normally he would offer a standard warranty but he is hedging on that without a new oil pump. so I would start looking for an outfit that could possibly either source one for this motor or rebuild yours to spec.

oh and the cost was around 2300ish w/o the pump, new internals with balancing the rotating assembly.

Bobby, is it possible to run a later model oil pump on that F motor? I has a 74 (1.5F) that I did the oil pump on and I used a later oil pump and took a baffle out of the pan so the pic up would work. Just wondering. It's been 20 years since I did that.
