So I live in an area where everything is dirt roads for the most part...

All the cars I've ever owned I can drive down a dirt road in the summer and lay down a big cloud of dust out the rear and none comes in the car (Jettas, Chevy trucks, Dodge trucks, Renault LeCar, etc....)

I've noticed that my 86 FJ60 generates a dust cloud that comes into the car when driving at most normal speeds. The front windows are open, not the rears, and it's pretty strong, enough to make you clear your throat occasionally while driving.

Any ideas as to the cause and I guess more importantly ways to fix it other than closing the windows? Yes, that does solve the problem...

are you sure it is coming from the windows? do you have rusted rockers? if you have holes in the rockers the dust from the back tires shoots up into the bed of your '60. it's happened to me before.

pretty sure it's the windows, only happens when they are open.

I'm not sure if you've noticed this or not, but the 60 isn't very aerodynamic. Just that's going to generate a weird air-wash around the vehicle.

What I do, when driving mine with the windows down, is roll the back pass window behind the open window down - causes a lot less buffeting. It causes a lot less air up front, but beats anything in the back seat to death. With that in mind, you may not get the brunt of it, but you'll probably still fill the back of the truck up with dirt.

Time to get that AC fixed...

thanks for the input...
it just seems really odd that this happens. My Dodge D250 isn't very aerodynamic either and it doesn't have this problem.

I'll try the rear window thing.

you can taste the dust going 25mph on a dirt road.

fender wells aren't rusted, door seals are good.

Anyone else notice this on their 60?

Yes, mine does it as well. I have a rust through on one rear fender that leaves my cargo area dusty but even without that issue, 60s seem to be magnet for dust inside.

i know they have the deflectors in japan.... lots of em.... but i can't get you any seeing as i am in Nebraska now....... I could call a couple of friends and see if they can pic up a set if you want....

I suppose it's the same aerodynamic quality that covers the rear glass with road grime with any amount of rain and sends exhaust directly into the cab if the back glass is left open.

After many many years I have finally turned my exhaust to exit the side and can ride with the rear glass open without falling asleep at the wheel from noxious fumes.

Aerodynamic!!! like a brick!

Hallelujah! I'm doing that next time I do the exhaust, it's incredible how you can almost asphyxiate your entire family picking up an Xmas tree! :D
