As a result of posting a picture of a HJ45 with 7.50 x 16 12PR Bias Ply Dunlop Universal LT tyres on in another thread. Some excitement and question regarding availability and specifications resulted. Some discussion followed and I have made some enquiries at a retail level.

The tyres are manufactured by Dunlop South Africa at their plant in Zimbabwe, they comply with DOT specification. They are freely available in South Africa.

RETAIL PRICE IN SA (AT PRESENT EXCHANGE RATE) = USD $154.42.

THIS PRICE INCLUDES A TUBE AND A FLAP FOR SPLIT RIMS.

THE PRICE DOES NOT INCLUDE SHIPPING COSTS AND RESHIPPING IN THE USA.

I have agreed to do the negotiations for a bulk buy with Dunlop locally and Whitey45 has agreed to deal with reshipping logistics on the USA side. I suggest for everybody's peace of mind that the financial arrangements are done from the USA directly with Dunlop South Africa.

BEFORE DOING SO I NEED TO HAVE A GOOD ESTIMATE OF VOLUME TO ENABLE ME TO NEGOTIATE BEST PRICE ON PRODUCT AND SHIPPING.

Ja, 700 x 15 12pr. I'm sure the price will be a little less than the 16" but the 15" mention came after I checked prices. I'll get you a price and post it on Monday. I'm off into the deep bush tomorrow and will have no coms.

For comparison purposes, here are some pictures of an original Dunlop tire from a mid-60's FJ40. A friend passed on this spare to me over 35 years ago!

At most, 29 inches in diameter:

I measure around 7 inches in width, and note three center channels compared to the two channels in the thread #1 picture:

I'm thinking these would be great for my 75 restoration. I have the 15" rims but the bigger tires for the 16" intrigue me. The question was asked above - can 16" split rims still be obtained new? Or would they have to be bought used from someone?

Thanks!

OK. I've spent so much on the Dagha Boy, and I'm way out of our market, so I have to sell it where I can still break even. I estimate that I will ship it from SA to USA (Houston TX) in Sept or Oct arriving Houston about a month later.

I have to pay for the container regardless of what is in it, so there is an opportunity to ship a fair number of tyres at the same time. The load bed is 7' x 5' and there could be more space around it.

The only additional costs will be the additional documentation, not sure what that would be though.

What do we do with them when they get to Houston? UPS?

Please give it some thought and let me know.

Hey Whitey45. I sent you 2 PMs...

Edit: Maybe I can get some splits too

I always loved those tires. If I remember right all the US FJ40s came with Dunlop RK up until very early '71 then they went with the Dunlop Snow Cruisers I think they were called? My Buddy bought his '71 first with the RK tires and then a couple of months later I bought my '71 and it came with the other Dunlops. I liked those RKs much better. They belong on the early 40's. I would love to get a set. I would not need split rims and would love to have 16" on conventional rims. I wonder if the buy ever happened.
I would give my left nu...uhhh, my left toe for a set of those babies. If the buy ever happens I'm in.
