Hello all,
I'm getting ready to take the exam for my license. My question is this........

Is there a Dual or Quad band unit that is a non-handheld variety that can still be swapped semi-easily between different vehicles. I'm more concerned about the unit itself. I have no problem having an antenna permanently mounted in each vehicle I will use the unit it.

Thanks tons for any advice. Can't wait to get going on all this.
:D

The radios that are more than dual band would probably need an antenna tuner unless you are only using one other band.

My Icom 706 for instance has two antenna inputs on the back, one for 70cm (440mhz) and 2m (144mhz) and one for 6m (50mhz) and up. As you know from studying for the ham licence, the 6m band and even the next band to that do not use the same antenna for optimum transmission/reception. I have, or will have, an antenna tuner installed as well so I can use a single 10' whip and have the antenna tuner take care of tuning the 10' whip antenna on the HF bands and have my dual band antenna do 70cm/2m.

If you want to move that from one vehicle to the other you're talking two antennas and a tuner as well.

I'd suggest a 70cm/2m radio and go with that. I have the radio I have because I am out in the middle of Central America not in the USA.

I will be going with a dual bander after doing some reading. Later on I might do the 6m thing but we'll see. I want to keep it fairly straight forward to start with. I don't mind having an antenna in each vehicle. I guess I'm looking for something that has a bracket system that will allow me to move it back and forth between vehicles. I may end up just getting two units but thats a last resort.

I have been doing a lot of research as well on what units are out there.

I think I have decided to go 2m only for the trail rig I tow to and from the trail head, most of the time, and go with a dual band with cross band repeater capability for the tow rig. The mil spec Yaesu seems to be the front runner now.

I am thinking that it could be possible to actually use this feature with a full power mobile in the trail rig because in many instances I am not that far from the tow rig to where I would not be able to send and receive clearly.

Can't get the rest of the group to pull the trigger yet on Ham and so I will contine my shoping.
