*&^%*#% starters! First it was the fancy smancy high torque gear reduction one on the Bugeye
now it's the FZJ80. Thank goodness it's relatively easy to get to on a FZJ80. I went with the optional
mondo cold climate unit this time for the FZJ80 rather than get the stock unit rebuilt.
It was only $40 to rebuild the Bugeye unit. A new one was $270.

I suspect the stock 80's starter could be rebuilt pretty cheaply too but I wanted an upgrade for the Coach.
$200 for the double amp cold weather unit wasn't so bad.
I'm hoping to install it tomorrow.

Just put one of those on mine....don't forget wobble sockets, they are your friend

Nothing beats a "GOOD" wobble head socket

Love my cold weather starter. I use a ratched head wrench when I changed mine last time.

Those stinking bolts were a bear to break loose. Grrrr
I had to slide a cheater bar over my wrench to get those suckers free.
After the initial break it was a snap with the gear wrenches.

Man...that new cold weather starter REALLY turns the beast's engine over.
Me like.

the double amp cold weather unit

what is this double amp cold weather unit you speak of?

is this a dealer only or a special kind of rebuild, what makes it different than a regular GR starter?

The motor is almost double the size of the stock unit. It was available for cold climate trucks.
I bought mine from my friend in the auto parts business.
I'm sure the Toyota dealers can get this if you request it.
It really does crank the motor at higher rpms but the main feature would be the doubled
torque of this unit as compared to a stock starter.
No mods necessary. Bolts and hooks up just like the regular starter.

Didn't mean that! the pictures don't do justice to how massive the 2.2 is

Go to Car-Part dot com and find one for around 20 bucks like I did and get the rebuild kit from RHT and you'll be set for a good starter for some time to come!!!

PS I used an impact with matco impact wobble sockets and a long a$$ extension to get mine off.... I love air tools
