On Gilligan's Island
So this year my roommate has a german short haired pointer. Absolutely great dog, extremely obedient (responds to verbal commands on one command), very loyal, basically well trained.
He is about 2.5 years old and not fixed.
The problem is, he has a huge problem with submissive urination. Like, he's pissed on the floor 5 times tonight already.
When he's playing tug of war with me, and I win, he pees on me/the floor. When he's getting into something he shouldn't and I scold him verbally, he pees on the floor. When I come home and he's excited and I accidentally stand too near/over him, he pees on me/the floor.
I figured this out about a week ago when I came home and he did it (before I thought it was because he wasn't getting taken out enough) and I sent him to his crate ("Gunner go to your bed!" and he does so in 1 try) and cleaned up the mess. Then I took the piss soaked paper towels and had him smell his urine, and said "Gunner, bad dog." and he pissed ALL OVER his bedding in his crate. It was at that point it was pretty clear this wasn't just a matter of not being taken out enough.
Anyways, I now know to absolutely avoid scolding or exciting him when he does it because he's already submitting and won't get it (basically to just clean it up and ignore him until he calms down) but is there an effective way to train him out of this type of submission? He's getting to the point where he isn't really a puppy and this should not happen anymore, so I'm worried soon it will become permanent. I'm working on trying to let him get out of his excited state and calm down before I crouch to his level and address him calmly (so he doesn't submit/pee) but he still does it all the fawking time. I heard him chewing something and called him to my room ("Gunner, come.") and he peed immediately when he got to my door. Wtf.
Wondering if mud has any wisdom on this. I'm sick of scrubbing up dog piss.
