Over Thanksgiving i got suckered in to adopting a mutt from the local shelter. She was on "dogie death row" and only had 2 days left.
She is 32lbs, small/Medium frame, short hair soft coat, sheds alot of hair, one half blue eye, very fast, smart, loves to chase anything moving and is constantly watching the sky and following birds across the horizon.
At first not knowing what breed she was really bothered me, but after bonding with her it didn't matter to me anymore. BUT my girlfriend still wanted to know. One of her co-workers had done a dog DNA test that came back and seemed pretty accurate.
She got it done through DDC Veterinary. It cost $60 and took 3 weeks to get results.( http://www.vetdnacenter.com/canine-breed-test.htm ) They send you a check swabbing kit and a return envelope. They claim to get the DNA analysis from dead check cells.
The results are mailed back with the 4 highest resulting breed lines and are rated by level 1-5.
Lvl 1 over 75% of DNA make up
Lvl 2 37-74% of DNA make up
Lvl 3 20-36% of DNA make up
Lvl 4 10-19% of DNA make up
Lvl 5 less than 10% of DNA make up
Got the results today, parts of it make a lot of scene others not so much.
The shelter said they thought it was a Blue Heeler Mix.
Girlfriend thought she was a catahoula mix
I thought she was a Greyhound and some kind of cow dog mix or bird dog mix
Results from DDC:
Lvl 2 shetland sheepdog
Lvl 3 Greyhound
Lvl 3 Great Pyrenees
Lvl 5 Collie
Like I said some of the results are believable others dont seem to fit much, bt o well. The co-workers results n her dog seems to be a perfect match.
One flaw that that may explain a few things is the DDC DNA bank only has 62 breeds from the AKC, which is a very limited view of the dog world.
Overall it was kinda cool but not as conclusive as we had wished.
