I live in San Francisco and I have a MT6. On the steep streets near my house I sometimes have trouble with the parking brake holding the car.

I read the relevant section in the manual which says "Stepping on the brake pedal can improve the holding power of your parking brake" and that works sometimes. Many times the heavy car slides back about 6" or so.

Now I do live on one of the steepest streets in the city. Anyone have any problems with this? Should I take the vehicle back to the dealer to have the brake adjusted?

if you put it in reverse and parking break it shouldn't move an inch

Do you put the car in gear before you turn it off? I have kinda the same "feature", but 6" is alot more than I experience. Don't worry about the parking brake holding. I had just gotten off a trail and decided to see how the parking brake would stop the vehicle - at about 30 MPH I pulled the parking brake and came to a squealing halt.

Yes. I have developed a series of steps:

1) Park on Steep Hill (not too hard in my neighborhood :))
2) Shift to neutral and stomp on brake
3) Engage parking brake
4) Turn off motor
5) Have parking brake hold
6) Put car in 1st gear

Maybe 6" is a high estimate, but the car does move back an "uncomfortable" amount. I had a rental MT jeep that did similar roll back - I was assuming that it had been trashed since it was a rental.

A couple of points:
  • If your parking brake doesn't hold the FJ, you should get it adjusted.
  • Unlike a lot of vehicles, 1st gear has the lowest ratio in the FJ (lower than reverse)

4Low in first gear should do :)
