I was told it was but I have heard it is just recomended like in my wifes Lexus. Just curious what the owners manual says. Thanks

According to the comparo in Motor Trend (or was it Car & Driver?), it does. I haven't seen any Toyota literature yet, so can't verify that it's true...

Here is what is says directly from the Owners Manual:
OCTANE RATING
Select premium unleaded gasoline with
an Octane Rating of 91 (Research
Octane Number 96) or higher for
optimum engine performance.
Use of unleaded gasoline with an octane
rating or research octane number lower
than stated above will cause persistent
heavy knocking. If it is severe, this will
lead to engine damage.

and in the grand scheme of things the premium gas is about 10 cents higher than the mid-grade which equates to, at the worst case, another $1.70 at the pump. What's another dollar when you've just dumped $38 of gas in anyway?

Hey! That attachment with the explanation on octane in modern engines was really interesting. Thanks for posting it.
Now if we could find out which company's provide fuel with good additives and those company's who don't.
I often wonder about all the fuel additives that claim they clean your fuel system. I don't cut any corners when it comes to vehicle maintenance and would probably use these products if they worked.
There are so many rip-offs on the shelves that I usually give all of them a pass.
