Hello y'all

I have a friend who might soon be intrested in placing a few Anatolian Shepard dogs in good homes. She is a breader/shower of Anatolians and as such is very picky about where they go. So I am posting this for anyone who might acctualy be looking for an Anatolian, or for their first big dog.

Did i mention that they are HUGE?? Our Teada's shoulder comes just shy of my hip and I am 6'1", I have to bend my elbow up to scratch his head when he is standing next to me.

They are very calm dogs, but are also very protective of family, We have had folks come over to our house, and Teada will constantly position himself between our kids and the "strangers" it is a beautiful thing to watch, it isn't aggressive, just a constant repositioning, keeping himself in the middle.

We love ours we got from her, but i would not recomend then to someone with no experince with dogs. The link below outlines why.

that link gives a good description of the breed.

I know there are some real Dog lovers out there in the Cruiser world.

I am currently in the "middle east" so i can't gaurentee i can check this post regularly but if you email me i can help.

These are Turkish dogs, ironically. In Turkey they are bred to protect sheep herds, property and police/military use them for various mission specific tasks.

In the right hands, they can be gentle, protective, great with kids and generally all around good dog.

In the wrong hands, they can tear your neck apart and spit you out before you even have a chance to figure out what attacked you. They can be vicious.

They are called "Kangals" in Turkey.

I'd get one but I don't have enough property. These are great dogs if you have property--lots of it. Not a very good city/apartment/subdivision dog.

Anatolians are very cool dogs. I would love to have a pair, but I currently have two dogs. Anatolians need lots of exercise and usually a good "alpha" human. Dan would you PM me her info for future refrence?

I just picked up an Orvis catalog that details a Cheetah preservation group in Namibia that is working to place these dogs with local herdsmen to protect the flocks. Apparently the locals were killing cheetahs to prevent raids on the animals but are starting to use well trained dogs to posture and bark to guard the herd and not fight....seems like it worked in Turkey for centuries so why not Africa. Very cool dog.

My wife and I would be very interested but are clear accross the country...man I wish we were closer:frown: :frown:

I've been around a couple of these. They ran the neighborhood where my shop is located. It's a mix of a couple small shops, one large one and some residential, all on a dead end road with a creek wrapping around it. Natural boundries and several dogs allowed to run loose along with the ones (like mine) that are kept fenced.

Anyway, these guys have alwasy been friendly and loving to everyoine in the neighborhood. Very friendly to strangers. Play well with kids passing through the neighborhood and with all the other dogs. I would not want to go into their house at night and mess with any of "their people" on their turf. But I have never seen any sign of viciousness, over aggression or other troubling signs from these two animals.

And yes, I know dogs. I raised wolf hybrids for years and had five of them through their entire lifespan. I have a motley crew of 6 mixed breed mutts these days. Unless those two were aberations, I would be very comfortable with these dogs.

Mark...

Each person will add their life’s experiences to their interpretation of what they read. Mark W and Zimm I thank you both for your opinions.

That being said, PLEASE NOTE I ONLY RECOMMEND THESE DOGS TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS DOGS AND HOW TO HANDLE AND TRAIN DOGS PROPERLY.

We absolutely love ours, but don’t think for a second I would not put him down if he showed any unprovoked aggression towards anyone.

Again, I anyone is interested in one of these dogs I will be happy to put you in touch with Debbie and her vet Jessica.

You mention that she is a breeder of these dogs. Is she looking to have dogs adopted into good homes, or looking to sell dogs to good homes?

I am not sure at the moment... my cousin Jessica is her vet, Jess mentioned that Debbie was looking for good homes for Anatolians. If you have an interest in the breed I will be happy to put you in touch with them. And let folks work out a deal with Jess and Debbie.

I am just a happy owner putting the word out for a friend.

as a caveat. it seems like anything you read on dogs has a dire warning. i had wiener dogs for 25 years and apparently they are are top 10 biter. never knew that.

Zimm,

Yeah i bet they are, but when they can't get past the bump on the side of your ankle... the threat seems diminished... :)

maybe those werent skeeter bites after all.... they were tryin to kill me the whole time.

a well trained one will position himself between you and strangers in an effort to trip em.

Very effective if the strangers are blind... or prone to clumsiness!!
