It will be under the 25 year rule. However, There will still be the whole deal with taxes and duties to contend with.

Could I do it on my own or is it not worth the headache? I have been looking for a BJ42 in Canada....

You are exempt from the D.O.T(25yr. rule) and EPA(21yr. rule). You will however, need to fill out DOT form HS-7 and EPA form 3520-1. Bring these forms to a customs inspection crossing. Duties on your rig are classified as a MPV(multi purpose vehicle) therefore, they are scheduled at 2.5% of the purchase price. Due at crossing. Here's a tip: Plan your route home from pickup. Determine the border crossing and call them ahead of time. There are import specialists that can answer your questions. Look up the U.S.Customs site. It will give you phone numbers to each specific crossing. So call ahead of time that way your squared away when you arrive. Easier for you and especailly for them. They hold the power to stop your entry. I found them to be very helpful and friendly,But thorough. which is fine by me that's what we're paying them for. I just imported one a week ago. Had to use an RI because mine was a 83BJ42. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions.Good luck

Be careful on the 25 year rule. If you get a strict Customs Office, they can base it off of the manufacturing date. So if you have a late 1981 mfg date, you should wait before attempting to import it.
