how often should diff fluid be drained and refilled?

I changed mine at the first 20K miles and it was black! I don't plan on changing it until the 50 or 60 K mile mark. Use a high quality synthetic diff fluid or the Amsoil stuff. Either way you'll be just fine changing it every 30K miles.

I change my diff fluid every 15000
After the first 15000 i wished i would have changed it at 5000 .
My diff change at 30000 was ok . It didnt look so bad. I use redline

I always change it in new vehicles around 5-8k miles as there appears to be more wear and such on new vehicles than after they have had time to "wear-in" a little... after that I do it about every 15,000 miles. I only use the good synthetic in there ....Redline, Amsoil, etc

4x4 Service Follow up

I have a TRD that is just over a year old. It has 36000 miles on it.
I did the 4X4 service at 26,500 miles and the rear was BLACK with several curly slivers of metal in the drain.Front Dif and Xfer case were fine.
I just did the 4X4 Service again and the rear was dirty but no metal present.
The front dif and transfer case were fine.
I went with all syn lube on this change and will do it again at 50K...gm

KLOTZ FREE-GEAR 75W/140 HYPOID in the diffs. It is good stuff. I put it in at 7000 and the front and rear fluids were clean.

If you have a 2006 build date I'd change the diff oil every 15-k to 20-k.

Front diff & x-fer case I'd go for everey 20 to 25-k...but I go through a lot of water & mud and run it pretty hard.
