I looked at a 96 with lockers today. Owner assured me it was "perfect" and always maintained perfectly, etc. and mentioned it had been detailed, engine cleaned, etc (personally, this is bad news to me, actually). So I get there and it's a complete dog. Literally. They'd clearly let a dog sit bored in it a lot as both rear seatbelt plastic receivers were chewed so bad they were literally missing perhaps 15% of the material, the driver's seat looked like someone routinely sat in it soaking wet (probably the dog waiting for the owner), the entire left side had been repainted poorly, several trim pieces were cracked and gouged indicating regular hauling of stuff, etc. It smelled like a wet dog inside, and the entire exterior was tired. They couldn't find a single shred of maintenance records - not so much as an oil change receipt for 140,000 miles.
It's amazing how people are willing to deceive, or how wildly varying their standards are. I think for some owners simply cleaning out the 7 Eleven coffee cups makes a car "excellent".
