Death Valley questions

I'm planning a quick Death Valley trip in a few weeks. We'll be meeting up with my dad in Lone Pine around noon on day 1, exploring in the afternoon, then overnight back in Lone Pine. Day 2 we won't get out of Lone Pine until around 10AM (long story) then we have the rest of the day to hit Death Valley, then exit the park and head for Bakersfield that evening. We have the 80, he'll have an F250 I think.

Day 1 I'd like to check out Cerro Gordo / salt tram departing Lone Pine after lunch then drop back down to Lone Pine by dark, is this realistic?

Day 2 what's a good destination in the park for a geologist, that we can get to departing Lone Pine midmorning and get back on pavement by 6-7PM?

No idea, if you post this up in events/expeditions (near bottom of forum page) you should get some advice.

Have only been to DV and that was with someone who knew the place much better than I did so I was just tagging along. Don't know the first place but know for the second day you could make it to Eureka Dunes and back out in good time. There is more geology there than just the dunes.
