We need a full tuneup done on the wife's 2002 Mazda MPV. Anyone in the club want to do the work? If not, any recommendations/opinions on who I can trust to do it?? :meh:

What's wrong with the MPV? Is it running bad, poor MPG, misfire, check engine light on? If it doesn't have anything really wrong with it I would just change the oil and call it a day. New cars don't require tune ups unless something has changed with it.

You know it is a real solid runner, smooth as silk most of the time BUT, during acceleration in any gear there is a narrow RPM band during which it is sputtering significantly to the point where you have to stomp on it to get past the "bad rpm" range. Unfortunately it also happens to be right between 3rd and overdrive and it goes to shift from 3 to 4 and starts sputtering a lot until you get it past there. It is exactly like my old Chevy- when it was time for plugs, cap & rotor and time to file or replace the "points". I could do all that crap but I've been looking and this thing- heII, I don't even think it has a dizzy..!!? And I saw a Youtube video on replacing the spark plugs and you have to tear half of the top of the engine apart to get to the back 3 plugs. Daphne said the engine light did come on last year for a short period of time but quickly went off and never came back on. It also has a real slow oil leak which unfortunately drips right onto the Cat so it stinks! No rush- we need to get it done before the Christmas Holidays because we're headed back to SoCal this year for the Holidays. ;) I'm also gonna do the brakes but I think I can handle those here at the house.:wrench:

A quick search revealed this thread. Sounds like a common problem. Maybe you could go down to Mazda and have them scan for a misfire and or check the PCV hose? But it does look like either a bad coil pack or a PCV problem. Either way a fairly easy fix, it'd just be nice to pinpoint one or the other ahead of time before anyone works on it.

Thanks Jesse, looks like a good source of info. I've bookmarked it. Weird stuff- coil on each individual spark plug..?? And I still don't know how the spark gets sent to the plug- no sign of a mechanical distributor. Must be electronically handled. I'll start tinkering with it after work tomorrow. ;)

I'm sure plugs and new coils are a good start since I have to pull the intake to get to those plugs. Mileage is around 90K and no telling if it's ever had new plugs put in. Also will start checking for vacuum leaks, etc. Will try to do it myself, besides, it's just a short walk to my wife's work from here! :wrench:
