recently someone kindly replaced my pcv valve and the hunk of dung is still running rich  ....and burning a quart of oil about every 500 miles:rolleyes:

wtf am i missing?

i did get it detailed recently though and it seems to drive a bit better ;)

seriously- anyone have any suggestions?

btw this is a '00 toyota celica--

How's the warmed up idle RPM?
How many miles on the car?
How many years have you owned it?

was it an OEM PCV valve?

...there's now another forum for "other" vehicles...

i bought it brand new, it idles at just under 1k

and it has 114k on it

most engines would idle at 600 to 700 RPM. Has it always idled at that speed(just under 1k)? When did it start burning oil( gradually or sudden consumption)? Any traumatic events occur with the engine (headgasket, overheating, etc) ?

it has always idled at that... or at least has for a long time

toyota said my head gasket is fine... it just started w/the oil burning this year

Have you checked the condition of the valve? Is it functioning? Have you beat on this thing like a rental car? Compression check, blowby in the engine compartment, burnt valve?

Help us, help you....

Do/did you drive alot of short trips or long trips? Did you recently change your driving patterns when the oil consumption was noticed? Was it consuming any oil before the engine consumed alot?

What about the puddle on the garage floor? Have you slipped on it lately?

this year i have done long trips out in upstate ny, philly, nj, etc

i usually add 2 quarts of oil-- one each way

there is soot on my back bumper :(

it had a tune up in december- i had a problem with a tensioner bolt just before that and decided to just have everything done- plugs wires, etc

i feel like a total idiot

tune ups, diagnostic tests, anybody that knows which end of a wrench to hold looked at it?

Please, help us, help you....

I think your oil consumption was always occurring. Maybe the high idle and rich fuel mixture just made your oil diluted with gasoline keeping the oil level constant . Only when you drive long distances are you seeing the diluted fuel in the oil fluid being burned off.
you can jump over a cat three times and say " Oh, what a feeling" and your rich idle mixture should be fixed. :)
or you can try some of the diagnostic tests that fsusteve suggested. And if you haven't slipped on the puddle of oil lately you're really missing out on alot of fun!

only on start up and then acceleration

and i haven't slipped on motor oil lately but i did slip in a puddle of oil polyurethane ;) does that count?

Any smoke?

If so is it at idle, or under acceleration?
