Living in the Past
SILVER Star
I picked up a FJ40 tub that has diamond plate in the rear corners, rear sill and at the bottom edges of the cowl. These are glue on by some means. Screws are removed but still stuck on. I don't want to pry and to do any body repair to good areas of the tub. Thinking a heat gun might work but not sure about fumes. Any ideas on how to loosen these up?
Update. I went out and tried to see if it was maybe just like Texx said. I used a blade knife and tried to cut into it. I seen the area where the PO had tried to remove it. I hadn't tried myself yet. Using a couple of screwdrivers I had the driver's rear corner popped off in less then five minutes. The PO said he had really tried with no luck. Only one 2" hole in the corner the rest of the area didn't even have surface rust. This hole is just outside of the double wall part which confuses me why a rust spot is even there. Looking from underneath I can tell the rear still is going to need to be replaced but I'm beginning to think other than that it's only small patch pieces needed. I had originally planned cutting the fenders well out of this one to patch into my 79 and a few other pieces to update the to a 82 tub. I really only took the whole tub because it was easier then trying to cut the pieces off at the guys house. I paid $50 for the tub, frame and the home made trailer it was on. He mainly want it gone. I had already bought all the running gear except the engine and front axle. Plus steering wheel, steering column, speedo, glove box door, rear heater and a few other things so I had already paid the guy money. Didn't want anybody to think I got this for next to nothing. So I do have some money invested. My 79 looks pretty ruff and I was figuring it would be a good start to fixing it up. Now if the rust isn't to bad it may be better to use the whole tub since it's straight and uncut.
I'm sure I'll have more questions once I get all the PO repairs removed.
Thanks again Texx.
