My CV is leaking at the bottom of the upper boot. I noticed grease yesterday slung under my wheel well. I did wheel a few days last week but nothing hard. I read up on the Blue Forum that this is often caused by the metal cinch band stretching and loosening up. To replace with a factory band you have to remove the axle but you can replace with a stainless band from Marine Supply.

My Q - would this repair be potentially covered under the powertrain warranty or only the 36k mile warranty. If it is only covered under the 36k mile warranty then I'm outta luck (@ 38k miles) and will try the Marine bands.

Thanks...

Both times I had my CV Boot replaced it was covered under warenty. The first time it was completely my fault I took a "stick" more like a small log thru the wheel well, CV boot and into the engine compartment. I do think there is some discression on the service writers part, but it can definately be covered...and should be unless you did something blatent to damage it.

Very true but he is past the 36,000 mile warranty. I don't beleive the dealership will cover this now that he is @ 38k miles. I'd say your best bet is to repair it yourself.

Oh...I must have glazed over that bit of his post...I'd give it a shot anyway, but you're probably right. Taking the axle apart will be a bit of a challenge, and time consuming....definately hit up the dealer first.

I vote pipe clamp Juice. If it then feels out of balance, replace the smaller one too and orient the screw adjustments to be on opposite sides of the axle to balance out.

Or get yourself a SS wire tool. A little spendy but very cool. I have one and used it do exactly this when I was out in Moab last year. ClampTite - The Official Website At the time it seemed the best option, since the OEM boot clamps required a $100 SST from TEQ.

That's a pretty nifty tool, I may add one to my recovery tool set. I currently use a pair of line mans pliers and just wrap wire around said object, then clamp with plires and twist till desired tention...

Hey Rick - I'm in ATL weekend after New Years - wanna use your nifty tool then??? :grinpimp:
We should be around that weekend, and it should take about 10 minutes to do.
