Picked up the Curt Trailer hitch kit and it looks like ive got everything I need, but im curious if I should be drilling holes here for the mount?

My brain says I need to but the manufacturer says I don't. thoughts?

Also I would like to put the "tie down hook"(5109560030) back on under the hitch mounting plate and grab a 2nd from a scrapyard and install it on the right side Good idea? Bad idea?

The Curt hitch is not designed to integrate into the mount that bolts on to the rear of the GX crossmember. That is why it is a 5,000# hitch and not a 6,500# hitch like the OEM hitch. There are no aftermarket hitches which integrate into the OEM rear crossmember mount.

If you want a hitch that includes that mount, I'd pick up a OEM Toyota hitch for either your GX or a 4Runner of the same year (they are the same other than logos on the plastic plug).

I had the Curt hitch. It hangs low, is ugly, and has crappy powder coating on it that flaked off. I replaced it with an OEM Toyota hitch, which is much better built. The cost was around $230 from my local dealer.
