Padre Island National Seashore

I've always wanted to do that trip. Get something together and I'll come down. (I got the radio the other day - thanks!)

Sorry it took so long to get it to you. Being a house-husband and general domestic bitch keeps me pretty busy.

I'm always up for a trip to Pardre; however, this time of the year is pretty brutal for those folks that don't have air conditioning.

The temperatures along the beach typically stay in the low 90’s but along the dunes or on the bay side can reach 100. The water feels great but camping on the beach is absolutely brutal. Windy, sand in everything and very, very humid. My family goes down at least once a month this time of year but we stay in a hotel and do the beach driving as a long day trip.

The distance from the beach entrance at the National Seashore, to the end of the island is nearly 70 miles. Miles 20 to 35 are USUALLY the most technical driving. I’ve seen some giant rigs with lockers get stuck in this area. The good thing is when you do; it’s usually just digging yourself out while the kids are playing in the water and collecting shells. The shell collecting is great and the water is usually very clear. The sand isn’t fine but larger pieces of crushed shell. This portion of the beach is known as “Big Shell”. Traffic on the beach past the “4x4 only” sign drops significantly and there are stretches where you can stop and not see another car in either direction. It’s nice to let the kids play and not have to worry quite as much about the traffic.

One other issue with Padre Island National Seashore is the constantly changing beach conditions. You never know if you’re going to have nice clean beaches or lots of debris. The debris can be in the form of simple seaweed or trash (plastic containers) dumped from passing ships and oil rigs. I’ve seen sea turtles nesting several times (they do so in the summer months) and swimming around the rock jetties at the end of the island. I’ve seen sharks in the surf, even swam with a few but never had a problem or heard of anyone having a problem. The sharks have no interest in us; only the bait fish passing through the surf. It’s really a cool place to visit but again, it depends of if you want to rent a hotel room for a few days and day trip the island, or, wait until October through December for a camping trip.

You guys let me know and I’ll be happy to “lead” a trip down the island.

This sounds pretty fricking fun, if the time is right Im down! Beach, beer and umm, another b word...woohoo!
