Returning to Toyota parts quality. I am not a monster, rather a small frame. I did not use any extender of a breaking bar. After changing oils yesterday I went under the vehicle to inspect for leaks. The gearbox fill hole was showing some oil. It was problemmatic before as well. So I was tightrning the plug and suddenly it went much easier. I reached for a stronger glasses and to my horror there is a crack. I have to say I reused the bottom plug to plug that hole because the plug that was there had the head pretty damaged, but otherwise they looked identical.

I think the vehicle is still driveable, I will put silicon over that, but any suggestion apart from a new gearbox installation? The vehicle is close to 400,000km.

Siliconed all that over. Hopefully it will hold. Thick layer, left it to cure for a week. If it is Selleys it works, right?

Copper washer? How much torque were you applying? Sorry that happened.

AARONTLC Is Correct. The copper washer was probably the issue causing need to over torque the plug to stop leaks. Loose the copper washer on the other plug, if present, and replace it with the correct soft aluminum crush washer to prevent damage to that hole.
Good luck with repairs for the cracked case.

Its a fill hole, so likely you're fine with JBWeld or silicone - as long as the crack doesn't propagate further. With the normal crush washer those plugs have a very small torque value - I think 14-18lb.

you could take it to a welder to have the end of the crack drilled then tig the crack. or try jb weld or something similar to repair it, just clean it really well and scuff it up to allow better adhesion

Clean with brake parts cleaner. Get the mating surfaces clean.. then apply JB weld and install a radiator hose clamp (worm gear type) on the outer periphery, then tighten it. Clean the inner threads before JB weld dries out. Leave it 12 hours and fill and put back the bolt with Al washer.
