I recently got back from a surf trip to Costa Rica for two weeks and thought I would share something we came across on the drive to a remote surf spot near Mal Pais.

It was the day after a night of heavy rainfall and we were driving through the jungle when we came to a river crossing at the bottom of a long hill that our driver was skeptical about going down before we checked out the depth of the river. I volunteered to go and as I was walking down the hill I saw a motorcycle off to the side with no one around but I could hear loud shouting through the trees. When I get to where the noise is it opens up into a field and I see an older 40 series tow truck sitting in the field.

I'm thinking this is really cool I've never seen a 40 series tow truck before I need to get a picture.........and then WTF.

There is a new Land Cruiser Prado that has washed down the river that the old 40 series (like Mater in that movie cars) is winching out. Gotta love it!

Enjoy the pics.....

Oh and the surf spot we went to was a right point break with no one around for days. We were catching 400-500 yard rides all to ourselves.:grinpimp:

Here's one more pic of the tow and a few of me surfing this spot.

Nice pics! I remember seeing those BJ40 tow rigs everywhere in Costa Rica, especially at those crazy roundabout intersections where people always wreck. There are some gnarly river crossings down there...looks like good times

cool

Wow THAT IS AWESOME. The worlds tiniest tow truck. When I was in Costa Rica I loved seeing those huge dump trucks on the hwy that said, "Jesus will never dump you".. Since we are on the topic of surfing in CR, heres my best photo from when we went years ago. Last time I was down there I got e-coli and was sicker than I have ever been in 35 years of life. I was so worn out they put me in a wheelchair at the airport, HURTING like a mo -fo. Congrats on scoring some waves. One more thing, the first time I went down there we rented a turbo diesel 3rd generation 4runner, that was soo cool.

PS If any local mudders I know ever want a place to stay down there I can get you a good deal on renting out our condo.

Which wave was that near Mal Pais? Have you surfed Cabo Matapalo yet?

This wave was actually near Cabuya south of Mal Pais. I'm not even sure of the name of the wave. I should get a surfers guide to Costa Rica and look up all the waves we surfed since there were between 8-10 different spots we surfed over the 2 weeks.

We started in Playa Hermosa for the first few days then traveled up to Mal Pais where we stayed for the next 8 days and then went back to Playa Hermosa for the remaining time. We surfed everyday 2-3 times and by the last day I could not go out since my shoulders and legs were shot.

I have not been as far south as Cabo Matapolo but my next trip will be down there and Pavones.

Our guide for this trip was Jim Hogan an ex-pro surfer from San Clemente who did an outstanding job of getting us to the waves in his 4WD Huyundai Turbo diesel van.

Zach -that is a very nice wave you got into!
