Connecting rod bearing question for 2F

I finally started assembling my 2F over the weekend. Everything is going smoothly and both rods and mains plastigauged within spec and my reground Delta cam went in nice and smooth. Even got the cam gear back on by putting the cam in the freezer and heating the gear in the oven to 200 degrees for 20 minutes. Out of the oven it slid on about 1/2" and a few whacks from a socket and hammer seated it all the way. But my question is regarding the orientation of the rod bearing caps. My machine shop balanced the entire rotating assembly and I installed the caps in the same orientation he gave them back to me in. But the notched side of the bearings for the upper and lower bearing shells are on the same side. Is that right? For some reason I thought they were supposed to be offset side to side?

isn't there an arrow or marking on the cap that should face towards the front of the engine?

You know I believe there is and I don't think I even looked at them. I know the pistons and rods are all facing the right way, but I never checked the caps, I just put them back on the way I got them back from the machine shop, which is probably correct it just seemed odd to me that the notched sides of the bearings were facing one another. It's been a while since i've assembled an engine and i'm being a bit over cautious. I can't believe I didn't look at the arrows considering how many times I double checked stuff yesterday putting the bottom end together.

The notches go on the same side, facing each other......

Its always a good idea to stamp the rod and cap when removed with some sort of identification.......

One would think that the machinist would have when they balanced and re-sized them.........

Thanks for the verification. It's nice to know it's correct. Oddly enough 2 out of the 6 were clearly stamped on both the cap and rod to match them up. But not the other 4. I kind of of threw him for a loop when I showed up with my "set" of oversized pistons that were all the same size but from 3 different manufacturers. I called everyone I could think of looking for oversized dome pistons, and the only place that actually had any was SOR and this was all they had. But he did manage to balance them all with a bit of work.

For the future, ITM part number ry6215 is the domed 2f piston and with a few phone calls, I found .030" (.75mm)and .040"(1.00mm) over sets at a few places...not land cruiser parts suppliers, but rather local engine parts warehouses.



I discoverd the same issue, with 2 of 6 rods clearly stamped to index the rod caps, but 4 didnt have stamps on both the cap and rod... I guess they built my engine on a friday afternoon, too.

How long ago did you verify this? And did they actually have them? My machinist called all of his suppliers and I called every place I could think of Cruiser specialists and otherwise and everyone said that both ITM and Federal Mogul had discontinued dome pistons for 2F's. I actually work in the foreign parts business and had all of our suppliers looking too. Even though a lot of places still had them listed they can't actually get them. The machinist actually had ordered me ITM dome .030 over pistons and they came in as flat tops. That's what started the whole ordeal. Of the 6 .040 over (all they had) pistons I got from SOR 1 is a Federal Mogul and the other 5 weren't marked. But 1 out of those 5 is a slightly different design. The real kicker is that I had to replace my cylinder head anyhow, and I spent far more to get a good open chamber head to go with domed pistons than I would have for a later head for the readily available flat tops. Live and learn I guess.

The .030" ITM's showed up on Monday via UPS(they don't do will call to private folks???)

The local parts place the machine shop works with didnt have them, and did call ITM and they are out of stock, so its certainly not easy to find them. Sorry to make it seem like they are falling of of trucks everywhere...

No front to rear markings..........

The rod has a oil hole on one side, that side faces the cam for lubrication purposes........
