G'Day, I plan on taking my two boys out to Colorado for some fun mining/logging road trips for a few days from July 27th for a week. I was thinking about basing somewhere around Colorado Springs. Anyone going to be out that way, or have any good routes to go on? I will be pretty flexible on where I go from there. I have a book as reccomneded by some here that lists all the trails and rates them. I will do mostly easy/moderate, since I will be traveling alone.

On that note, does anyone have some spare driveshafts to 'loan' me for the trip as a backup? I went to pick up my ammo box with spare driveshafts/birfield/belts/hoses this weekend where I store it in a shed at a hunting buddie's place, just to find out that someone loaded up a whole lot of stuff and hauled it off. He did not even know the stuff was gone. No idea even when it happened. Sucks, but hey, it's life.

I have the SM420 lined up, but will only install it after this trip.

are you driving the 40 in your avitar?
what year?4spd?

i'm pretty sure i have a couple 4spd shafts out here if you end up not finding any before you leave.

Jim, yes I am. It's a 78 with stock 4speed and a 4" lift. I hate not having spares, and going out on my own. It would be much appreciated if I do not find anyone local to loan me one or two. Where are you located? I like those sliders you fab a lot!

Thanks
Brian

What cha need? PM Me your needs and I can probably loan you spares for your trip.. LOAN only.
I'm in Blue Springs and work at 103rd and state line.

Brian,

I will be heading out to Estes Park on the 28th with the family in the 80. Plan to spend a couple of days there before heading down to Denver and then to Colorado Springs before heading back to KC on 8/2. It's mostly a family trip to visit old friends (used to live in Co. Springs) and play tourist. I'm hoping the wife will want to spend a day or two with friends, so I can run a trail or two (she doesn't like wheeling). Maybe we can hook up for a day. I'll have my cell phone, so give me a shout if you want to try to get together or if you run into problems.

There are a number of easy to moderate trails around the Springs. Mt. Baldy is a good one. Very scenic and a different view of Pikes Peak from the summit. Condition of the trail varies from easy to moderate. Last time I was there (4 yrs ago), they had recently taken a bulldozer to it in order to get some new microwave antennas up to the facility on the summit and you could of driven a Camry up it. Another scenic trail is Mosquito pass. It's a couple of hours west of the Springs, starts near Fairplay and runs to Leadville. Some interesting mining ruins near the summit. Last time I was there it was easily doable in a stock 4x4. Pick up one of Charles Wells books for the area and you'll have a good idea of what to expect on any of the trails.

Eric,

How about a capable FJ? with A/C? ;) In my box I had a hub, driveshafts, assortments of belts and hoses and electrical things and such. The more I think of it, the more I realize all I had in there. For the trails I plan on doing, I probably do not need anything, but one never knows. I will just have to purchase a new tree strap and shackles and pulley's and such. Jim (2BADFJS) has graciously PM'd me his personal details and I will have a contact whilst I am out there. If I get nervous before I leave about not having any spares, I will contact you. Appreciate the offer! I will PM if so.

Bob,

I will be in the area till around the same time as you, so would love to hook up and do a trail or two with you. By then I would have had enough of a 14 and 7 year old conversation...... I will PM you my Cell, and hopefully we can get together. I do have the Wells book and have a pretty good idea what I would want to do. I'm pretty flexible as to where I go from there. I will be towing the 40, so can pick up and head anywhere.

Jim,

I have your PM and have saved ur numbers. I appreciate the offer very much!

Thanks
Brian

The wife and I will be in Castle Rock that weekend too...we'll be getting there Friday from our trip to the San Juan mountains!!! Not sure if we will have time to wheel since we will most likely be running around town looking for homes, but keep us in mind if you go wheeling. I'll be staying with Mark Brodis, whom lives pretty close to 2badfjs.

later,

k

hey brian,
look me up that weekend.
we'll be at mueller state park camping 28-29 its outside of colorado spring up 24 toward divide colorado.
i'll be in a sprung over 60, tan
let me know if you want to meet up and i can bring the d-shafts with me.
i totally forgot about that :D

Jim, sounds good. It will probably be Saturday. Since I will be winging it most of the time as to where I stay, I will take a drive up that way.

Kumar, maybe we can get together with Bob Garrett and have a few hours of doing a trail or two. It would be great to wheel with you guys even for just a short time.

I know it has been discussed many times over on MUD, but I plan on flat towing the 40, since this will be the first time I go so far, I usually just drive it here within a two hour or so wheeling day. Good idea/bad idea? I will remove the driveshafts for this. I have oversized tires and have read that it will try to track one way when turning the other. Any suggestions? I do have a trailer I can load it on if I so decide.

Thanks
Brian

are you carring a cb with you?
let me know and i'll have my car and portible on
just have to pick a channel.

if not you have my cell, dont know if i'll have service up there.

looking forward to hooking up.

I'll keep my CB on channel 4 when around town if anyone is close to the castle rock area...this goes for you too 2badfjs!!

If you have a trailer, I would just use it. unless you are pushing your tow rigs limits.

If you have a trailer and adequate tow rig, I'd suggest that route. I've done both and felt much more comfortable with the trailer.

Yeah, I decided to go that route. Will take the F350 with a trailer and that way I can take the 3 four wheelers too. The boys will be happy.

Thanks guys for the input.

Brian
