Well, I think my bad clutch master cylinder episode must've killed my clutch. Coming home today it started slipping as I was going up a long hill. Is the only option to replace, or could it just be glazed and could it wear off? :frown:

If the clutch pedal freeplay and pushrod length were adjusted properly when you put in the new master, then it's the clutch and it needs to be replaced. You'll likely have to machine the flywheel as well - which should be done any time you're replacing the clutch.

I didn't change or check the pedal freeplay. I just checked to see that I was getting good travel of the clutch fork (can you have too much travel?). I'll check the pedal freeplay, but I guess I'm expecting a bad clutch.

Do you carry clutch parts, or is 4 Wheel Auto pretty much the only place that has them?

EDIT: Freeplay is good. Drove home today without any noticeable slippage. Strange.

Thanks

Which model do you have?

I have some stock, but have lots on order... thing have been thin for a year and a half and now I'm ramping things up again. My parts container is shipping soon.

Yes, you can have too much travel at the clutch fork if:

- The pedal free play is not adjusted properly

- The pedal height is not adjusted properly

- If the pushrod length (extending into the master) is not adjusted properly at the booster

The most common problem is a slipping clutch due to wear, but clutch master replacements can lead to slippage where the other settings are not checked and set back to specification.

Thanks John. It's a BJ70. I'll to keep driving it some more and see whether it starts slipping again or not. Past two days to and from work and it hasn't slipped.

Well, it started slipping again the other day when I took it on the highway. Today I loosened off the clutch master, and the clutch booster pin was in fact out of adjustment and pushing on the clutch master piston, putting a slight bit of pressure on the clutch.

Before loosening off the clutch master, the clutch fork to clutch slave had no play. After loosening, there was play.

Just thought I'd post my stupid mistake so others don't do the same thing. ;)

Finished adjusting the clutch booster pushrod and it feels much better. The clutch engages about where it should instead of at the top/end of the pedal stoke. Time will tell whether I cooked my clutch though... so far so good.
