Trying to find a clunk in the rear of my 1987 BJ-70.From a standing start and when shifted fron one to two there is a pronounced clunk in the rear.If your outside the vehicle when the clutch is being released the clunk seems to come from the axle??.Have checked driveshaft, joints,Checked ring gear backlash,I even swapped in another spider/side gear /center pin and spacer set from a known good diff and the noise is still there! The axle splines look OK but I seem to be running out of options...Anyone else run into this??

The 5 speed transmission output shaft wears out often in high mileage rigs. Usually it is worn where the transfer input gear sits. I've heard in Oz there is an aftermarket input gear that is made wider to reduce this wear. The RockHopper gear set MAF sells also has a longer input gear (you lose the PTO gear) to combat this problem.
