This is Cloudy. A 1984 FJ60 with 170,000 miles. It came from a loving home in Trail due to the horrible mileage, loose steering and turning into a money pit for its owners. It had been rear-ended and was totalled by the insurance company. I think I have had it since late last year but haven't had time to touch it.
I started on the interior last month. I stripped everything out and cleaned/shampooed everything I could. Sorry no before pictures but its best to leave the past in the past.. It was pretty gross. Last week I tore apart the carburetor, intake/exhaust, smog pump and power steering. I'm hoping to get it back together in the next week or so and then work on the desmog.
The 13mm bolt heads are a dead give away that this thing has been apart. The manifolds needed some finesse to line up which tells me someone replaced one of the manifolds at some point. It was leaking pretty bad and the EGR tube was really bad and the gasket was almost gone.. Now it is just a plate.
Found an aftermarket smog pump in poor shape, a broken DS engine mount, and a funky relocate for the Rancho steering stabilizer which happens to be too short..

The mobile home isn't mine...

Its my neighbors..
The interior come out nicer than my tan 60. I kept comparing engine to engine to see what was missing or incorrectly hooked up or botched up.

The damage

This the rear quarter, ds. I'd like to see what the Honda that hit it looked like-mmm, maybe not.

Hard to believe it was totaled just for that. Did you get it at an auction or know the people or what? It looks pretty darn clean so far.

x10 on the total "damage" I had worse on my 60 from driver error and trees:rolleyes:

looks good bud, I'd still be driving my '60 if not for that unfortunate J**p incident....

Looks pretty nice :) Fun project.

The rig was on c-list when fuel prices were so high. The PO said it wouldn't have been totalled except the shop said the frame damage pushed the price up too high.
A good body shop would need to watch out for possible drive train damage if the motor moved too much or any body mounts were bent and seeing as it has high miles they probably blue booked it at 2 to 3k-easily the cost of any body/frame work required, bumper, maybe rear tailgate and the replacement quarter panel. The rig has been resprayed with a good 10' paint job but may have had something happen up front as there is no "toyota" badge on the grill. Front bumper is gone.
It ran smooth except for the exhaust leak and noisy flow-master muffler. It drove straight and the tires aren't wearing weird. The motor fired right up after sitting for a couple months. So I would say it is a solid rig.
I noticed some non-OEM bolts on timing gear cover today and on the skid plate as well. Just curious as to what has been done on this previously. I am assuming it was the owner before that repainted and did paint.
Plans are to get it dialed and sell to finance my diesel conversion. If the desmog turns out good I will do it on my tan 60 (Turdy)

Any body know where to source a junkyard or aftermarket pulley and tensioner to replace the smog pump?

not me, but I do spy a '55 in front of the neighbors mobile; that yours or the neighbors, and if yours, what about a drivetrain swap into it?:D If I had two '60's and one were 'totaled', and a '55 - :grinpimp:
I would definitely do that.

just sayin'.....

'55 is done, just need to extract rear axle, windows and whatever else might have value and send it off for scrap metal..

:crybaby:

oh well, can't win them all I guess... at least you are keeping a '60 from the crusher for a while longer.

A couple of options to replace the smog pump. Gut the vanes from the existing SP if the bearings are good. Use an SP that I have that is already gutted. Idler pulley from JimC. Or an FJ60 alternator with an FJ62 Motor mount and a 43.5 or 44" fan belt. You can read Kevin Rowland's write up on that and/or look at mine when you get a chance.

I was lookin' at the old smog pump and don't know that I want to use it but may end up using it. It seemed pretty simple to make an idler pulley but when you start buying parts it get expensive. A junkyard might be the best place to find something.

What exactly are you running on yours Joel?

I ran a gutted smog pump for about 4 years with no problems. Now I've switched to a second alternator ala kevin rowland style. It uses an FJ62 motor mount that has the pivot bolt hole integrated. The mount is cut to allow full swing of the alternator. I used the stock pulley (Kevin somehow found a larger pulley, that I can't find anywhere) and a 44" belt. Right now, the alt sits right against the PS gearbox so I think a slightly shorter belt is in order but it is running fine. I scored big on the alt, I had bought an FJ62 alt and all the associated hardware from a guy in seattle but found that the 62 alt wouldn't fit. So I called the local wrecker whom I knew had a 60 in the yard. It still had the alt and for $50 I had a super clean, Toyota Factory rebuilt ND alt in my hands. That's God working for sure.

I still have the gutted smog pump if you'd like to run it for awhile until you decide on something different.

Getting ready to go put it back together. I must have tweaked it getting the pulley off as the lobes were rubbing on the housing. Nothing a grinder won't fix.

Desmog completed... wow, look at all that room- Oh wait, you can't without a picture! Timed and in the middle of a junkyard muffler install. It's a toyota muffler, I tried the resonator vs. the muffler but the muffler, although big is very quiet. Put in a reman PS pump too.
Remaining items left: Replace front left shock ('schwab warranty item), reinstall rear panels with speakers, install misc. items on engine, wiper blades, find rear wiper head, Toyota emblem on grill, coolant flush, adjust valves, check plugs, change oil and maybe front oil seal. I may put some bumpers on this thing but then again It may just go up for sale when I get these little things done. Its amazing how long this piddley stuff takes.
BTW, the desmog is definitely worth it if you aren't in a smog requiring area!
