I've looked around a bit but have not found anything definitive on what would be a good external mount CB antenna to go with. I recently got the Midland 75-822 that I've been happy with in general, but as one might expect using it from the truck without an external antenna makes it just about useless.

So I want to get an external antenna that I want to mount on my rear bumper. I'd like to have something that can easily be detached/attached so that I can only have it there for the couple of times a year that I need it.

Any advice on what to get for antenna/mount?

I started with a Radio Shack mag-mount, it blew off my Eclipse at high speeds a couple times. Went to a Wilson 1000 mag-mount, that's a serious magnet and antenna. It tended to get stray metal bits on the magnet, so I kept a piece of plastic under it to protect my roof.

A high-end antenna will do more per dollar than most anything else for transmission and reception. A few times I put it on other peoples cars to see how their CB would work with it, and it was dramatically better every time. I also took my CB to a repair shop where they turned up the gains on the amps, boosting signal quite a bit. Somewhat not legal.

Go with a high quality mag mount, you can use it on any car, very easy to move around.

Thanks for the quick response.

If I wanted to mount something on the rear bumper (say a Slee rear with a tire carrier), would this still be the preferred choice? vs. moving a way from the magnetic type and just attaching a quick release?

Firestik, Radio Shack stocks them now along with the base.

I built a mount that bolts to the tub. After these pics were taken I added a spring between the base and antenna (tree breakage). Easy to just unscrew when not needed.
