hey guys,

I have a couple newbie questions about hard starts when the engine is warm. It started pretty suddenly last weekend. My 40 starts up easily initially but when it's warm I can't get it to fire up unless I remove the air filter head. After doing this it will start but idles very rough unless I give it some time to cool down. I had a few hard starts when I initially brought the truck home to Knoxville but the carburetor was tuned for 8000' in Colorado. After having the carb adjusted about a month and a half ago I haven't had any problems at all until last weekend. Any ideas what could have gone south so quickly with the carb. Does anyone have any suggestions as far as shops in Knoxville that will and can work on a carburetor?

Are you sure it is the carb? My dads 40 was doing the same thing. He even bought a trollhole card, new dist., and all new plug wires etc.... His would run for awhile real good and idles good, then it would just starve for gas when the engine warmed up. Think he finally narrowed it down to some trash in the tank and a clogged fuel filter. Check that out and see if it is giving you trouble. Just my .02 worth.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check it out asap!

Kyle,

Did you ever figure out your issues? I have some experience with difficult carbs (the guys i ride with know what I mean :bang:) so i can probably help you out to a point. I have a '73 40 with a Weber 32/36 (on a 1F motor) that always gives me trouble as well as a '76 40 with a Weber 38/38 (on a 2F) that fires and runs without hesitiation no matter what.

Long story short, I agree with "bluehawk" above about checking your carb fuel filter first, then regular fuel filters, etc...

First step to help you though, what set-up (carb) are you currently running?

As to shops, dont know any off hand, but i am sure some of us could help you out...

Thanks Nik. I checked for any blocks in the fuel filters etc and didn't locate any. The carb was stock and I am replacing it with a Weber 38. I'm also replacing the alternator as it was only showing 11 volts. Not sure if that had anything to do with the hard starts or not but it seemed like it was on its way out.
