Is it fair to say, in general, one never welds to an old existing weld bead? I know everything needs to be clean, etc., but should you also grind away any remains of old weld material?

Thanks

This is a very general question and I will give you a very general answer.

Yes you can weld to an exsisting bead, It is common practice to run beads ontop of each other to build things up, Or on large joints when joining large plates together.

If you give me a little more detail I might be able to shed some more light on what you are planning on doing.

Clean and weld. No problemo.

This is just me showing my ignorance when it comes to welding :).

The area is the photo forms a nice tight outline of where the replacement sill will go at some point, in other words a nice fit. I just wondered if the old weld material would create a problem with the new bead.

grind it down to clean it up and weld away..

I was just concerned it may have been a structural weld of some discription, But body work there is not prob at all, go mad.
