I love this rig, however, am considering pulling a travel trailer that weighs 5500 lbs or so. I know the specs show 5000 as it's towing capacity but what are anyones thoughts on this?

Why would you want to pull a travel trailer with a vehicle that's not designed for pulling? :D

That aside.... I used to own a tree removal business and towed a 16 ft double axle utility trailer usually full of logs and tree branches with my FJ 40 and didn't experience any problems. The 40 only has 135 hp or thereabouts too. The FJ Cruiser has much more hp and torque as well as lower gearing. I still wouldn't use it for towing a travel trailer though..... hehe..

I tow a car trailer with my fj40 loaded behind my 80....5000 tow capacity...9000 miles in 2005, 3000 already in 2006....not fast on hills but otherwise fine....

Guy from FL arrived at GSMR with a FJC on 35's towing his fj40 on a trailer...

not recommended, but it's been done....

I have a 1993 GMC Sierra 2500 (454ci V8, 700r4 trans, corp 14 bolt) I purchased specificaly to tow a TT. At 127K the transmission went south. Over it's life I have replaced brakes about twice as often as a vehicle not used for towing would require. Even with extra service it is pretty much used up way sooner than it would have been under normal circumstances.

Towing a TT is hard on a rig even one designed for the job. Lots harder if it is not designed for the job.

The FJ Cruiser can tow 5000 in a safe way, so if you stay under 5000 you wont have any problem whatsoever. Of course you have to keep in mind that you are towing, as one should anyway.
Over 5000 you might run in difficult situations, I don't think it will harm the Fj, but be very careful.

Toyota's owners manual states the over 1000 lbs you need trailer brakes, and over 2000 lbs you need sway devices that are approate for the weight of the trailer. No more then 500 lbs tongue weight.
That stated the weight we travel with is around 3000 lbs (12k miles so far for the central team) and pretty consitant in that departement. The truck tows well, but I would reccommend that you put in a air bag system in the springs or go with heavy spring in the rear if towing all the time. With the 300 or so lbs on the rear of the FJC we are on the first of two bump stops(the one inside the springs). We do hit the secondary bump stops alot. IMHO, the trucks suspension is not set up right to handle 5k lbs of towing with out doing some things to beef up the suspension. Of course if you are towing over the reccommended ratings and you create a accident with said trailer and your insurance company finds out and chooses to be a pain, you could be in a world of hurt. later robbie

5500 lbs loaded or unloaded... if it's loaded you will be pushing it and would not take it two far or up or down any big hills... if it's unloaded forget about it...
Well, I would want to pull the TT because I would have no other vehicle to pull it with. I am learning about the FJ, so bare with me with my dumb questions, therefore, if you pulled loads with your FJ40 what would be your reason for not pulling a TT with the FJ- TT weighing loaded at approximately 4500lbs

Why wouldnt you want to pull with the FJ? the towing capacity is 5000lbs & if the FJ is equipped with the tow braking system along with EZ lift stabilizers along with the fact that it would have the power to do it, why not? Thoughts?

The dry weight of the trailer is 3620 + I figure in about another 1000 for fuel/water/belongings. Probably weighing a total of 4600 or so-just under 5000. If the manual states 5000 towing capacity- why would someone not tow with the FJ? your thoughts?
