I know we are a SD club, but with being a newbie out here in this time zone, I'd thought I'd ask those with more miles in this area for some advice.

We are on our way to Durango this weekend and wanted to stop in the Flagstaff/Sedona area for the night, or two, on the way there...

Anyone have suggestions on good campsites? We will be tent/rooftop tenting it and are cool with, and actually prefer, primitive sites.

We also don't want to be too far out of way as this is a stop on a fairly long drive...

Thanks!

I recently stayed near Flagstaff at a KOA but I heard it was booked out for months. Oak Creek Canyon has very nice sites but I am sure they would be hard to get. I have seen plenty of primitive camping east of the 17 toward Mormon Lake off forest service roads.

Dead Horse State Park, I haven't been there but a friend (who coincidentally used to have an FJ55) raves about it. It's about 30 minutes south of Sedona I believe.

Schnebly Rd. off ramp on I-17, in a bit before you drop down to Sedona. Or as previously posted off 17 to the east towards Mormon Lake?

For primitive camping Schnebly Hill Rd west off I-17. Plenty of campsites along/off the road, up in the trees. Lots of Elk. Camping is permitted until you get to the Sedona overlook. If you decide on a campground, Manzanita Campground in Oak Creek Canyon on Hwy 89A just south of Slide Rock State Park is really nice. This time of year may be tough getting one of the premier sites along the river but you will likely have the road trip gods on your side. If you choose to stay an extra day there is great hiking up West Fork Trail just past Slide Rock.

Thanks for all of the advice! We will see where we end up tomorrow and I'll post up some pics!
