I had a Nissan Patrol camper come into work today to have a bash plate made up. An Austrian couple own it and have driven it from Austria. Their English was reasonable so I was able make out that they have taken it across the Sahara. While in Australia they have done the Simpson Desert, Canning Stock Route, and Fraser Island. About 30,000km just in Australia:cool:

The camper was made by Einleitung Looked like a very good conversion.

The Patrol was LHD so for a guy that is used to RHD it felt freaky driving it onto the hoist in the workshop:eek::eek: I don't know how you guys do it.

Can you actually cook a meal in there? Just looks too cramped and lacking ventilation.
Was it the self grenading TD 3.0 diesel?:D
It would be cool to do a trip like that. They have probably seen more of oz than most aussies;)
Is that the sleeping quarters too?

The camper used a diesel powered stove http://www.taylormarine.com.au/upl_images/Wallas Stove 85DP.pdf

In this pic you can see the back of the stove on the top shelf of the storage system and the fuel tank for it the clear bottle on the bottom shelf. You can also see the stainless skin fitting above the RHR flare which is the exhaust pipe for the stove.

The roof is a pop-top so it allows standing in front of the stove to cook while the top is up.

G'day Rosco

Beat me to it:D

See the post about the pop-top. The stove apparently exhausts to the outside so is OK to use inside.

Yeah it was a 3.0TD, that's the biggest they can get over there.

They sleep upstairs.

There are diesel fired stoves made with external exhaust. Webasto X 100 is one of them I ran across. Nice ceramic cooktop and all the fumes are dumped overboard. One of the units I found a couple years ago had an optional blower unit that allowed it to operate as a heater too. I'd think if you put a suitable heat sink with fins on top of this unit and blew a fan across it it would also work as a heater. Unfortunately no temperature control.

We ask the same thing about you guys.

Cool pics. Where do these Europeans get the money and time do these multi-month/year long excursions all over the world?

We're lucky to get a few days or maybe a week or two off a year over here.

I know a good number of Americans that go and take months or years off and take long trips. They just do it in an RV and travel the States, or even Europe. People take the trips their friends take or that they hear about others taking.

I would have swapped out that 3.0TD grenade. With all them going bang in the Aussie Patrols, it would not be my choice for a multi continent trip. Although, some say that Nissan got the problems sorted. Still, the displacement is small for the load it is asked to carry. Also, there is part support for the TD4.2 world wide in various application but not for the Grenade. The TD4.2T or (TI) is still available new from Nissan. I am not sure if you can order it as an option in Europe but you can definitely get it in the Middle East. In Australia Nissan offered box engines for $6,800 and $7,200 AUS respectively last Dec and I believe they still are available. (Wish they would do the same here.:frown:)

Anyways, this does gives me some ideas for my High Roof Safari:

As you can see I got a bit more head space. It may not happen with this rig but in say 5 years i dream of turning another Safari or a Troopie into an expedition rig for a Latin America run.

BTW, did you get any pics of the pop-up? I have been wondering what is best, a pop-up or a roof top tent. I would not want to go too much higher and their pop-up seems to be very thin.

But at least our steering wheels are on the "right" side;)

I get 4 weeks a year holiday and I try to save them up to give me a decent break.

They were saying they can't get the bigger motor over there because of the emissions thing. The 4.2 is the way to go though.

A mate of mine has a Safari:grinpimp:

I didn't get any pics of the poptop but the website in the first post has pics

Sounds like you can get the 4.2 Patrol diesel where ever you can still buy the 1HZ ,which is in countires where the rules on emisions are non existant;)

You might like Harbs new Patrol even though it has a petrol engine. He normally has Landcruisers but bought a Patrol for the coil suspension.

Now if he could just buy some front teef:hillbilly:

Too funny. I just saw that vid on 4WDAction yesterday. Nice troll. Especially like the mods. Bet they were $$$$$. BTW, which truck did you vote for as the best 4WD?:hillbilly:

The suspension looked good but a turbo diesel would make it perfect. Harb needs some front teef before he spends anymore on mods:hillbilly:

Do you mean the Patrol vs 200 series? I couldnt be bothered,if they really want my opinion they should let me drive:D
Seriously, the vehicles have been drifting apart in terms ,price weight and HP. I like the Patrol solid axle coils and the Toyota V8.

For me the perfect "new" Landcruiser would have been an upgraded 105 series with the V8 diesel and a choice manual/auto:grinpimp:

It sucks having only manual in the 70 and only auto in the 200

If Nissan launches a new model with a bigger capacity engine ,they will sell well

Ditto. The Nissan is underpowered, the Toyota doesn't have live axles and is too heavy.

Actually I was told the other day that the new VX 200 doesn't have dual fuel tanks because they go overweight with a full tank of fuel. Imagine how little luggage you could squeeze in for a trip.

The 105 with the D4D V8 would be the ultimate. If rego wasn't so high for V8s:rolleyes:

Nissan is still screwing around on the engine. You'd think that nearly a decade would be enough time to come up with a reliable engine that wouldn't be prone to grenading. IMO, since UD truck is gone to Volvo, they don't have the commercial division expertise to come up with a good efficient workhorse engine. I heard that they were trying to work something out with a Renault diesel. However, Renault and reliability are not two terms I would put together. We never had Renault diesels here but the Renault gas vehicles were ****.

For me, my dream expo rig would be a newer 76 Series with the 4.5 L turbo diesel or a GU with a TD4.2T.

What dreams are made of ....:):):)

There is a lot of controversy over the weight. Its GVM is the same as an 80 but with all the extras it has cut the payload to almost passengers only.

I think Toyota need a rethink on where landcruiser is going especailly with cheap fuel gone forever.
I also think the rear axle being 100mm narrower sucks too ,but hopefully this will be rectified in the 09 update.
Snake Racing are selling spacers to bring the rear wheels out

I dont believe the Nissan is lacking power ,but I think they tried to wring too much from a 3.0 litre 4 cyl.
I think a straight 6 is the best all round engine shape but manufacturers want more efficient engine shapes to increase cabin room.

The guys at 4wd Action think the 105 could handle an engine swap with a diesel v8 asits chassi rails are wider than a 70:grinpimp:

I do like the 76 with the D4D a lot too. The cabin space is a bit smaller than the 100 though.

Having experience with the Nissans I respect that they do a good job at what they do but I am still a Toyota fan. There are a couple of little things with them that I don't like that the Toyotas do better.
