IMO 1/8th is plenty after you box the ends, add hitch, tow points that go thru both walls, build in gussets & mount, save weight to.
 
So mine is a bit different. I used 6 X 2.157 X 0.437 c-channel. A36 is nice, common steel to work with. I'd prefer to go 3/16 for a bumper build if using box, and like peesalot mentioned, box the ends and through with the hitch. But I'm really hard on my rear bumper and would convince myself 1/4 is my friend :rofl: But clevis mounts on the face of 1/8 makes me nervous.
